Rakitha Malewana (also known as Rakitha Dilshan Malewana) is a Medical Researcher that brought honour to Sri Lanka by winning a Gold Medal First Prize at International Environment Sustainability Olympiad 2015, held in The Netherlands.,[1][2][3] and another Gold Medal at International Science Projects Olympiad (ISPrO) 2015, held in Jakarta, Indonesia.[4]

Early life

Rakitha received his education from Nalanda College Colombo. While at school Rakitha has been doing extra curricular activities and has been the President of the College Science Society, President of College Science Researchers' Society, Chief Organiser of College Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society. He became the top ballet dancer at Nalanda College in 2011.[5] He was crowned as a traditional kandiyan dancer (wes dancer) when he was 11 years old. Rakitha is working as a Dubbing Artist, a Voice Artist and a Television Programme Presenter at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and some other television and radio stations in Sri Lanka.

Medical research and achievements

Rakitha does his medical research in collaboration with University of Colombo, Medical Research Institute Sri Lanka, National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka, Ministry of Helath and Government Annalists Department Sri Lanka.

Rakitha Malewana won a Gold medal for the research he has done on HIV at the International Scientific Research Olympiad 2015 held in Jakarta, Indonesia in year 2015.[6] In the same year he won a Gold Medal at the International Environment Sustainability Olympiad 2015, held in The Netherlands.[7][8][9]

His research using Nanotechnology as an Anticancer Agent: Effect of Catechin coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Human Leukemic Cells Won the Bronze Medal at International Science Projects Olympiad 2014 held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Also it was selected to Represent Sri Lanka as a Finalist at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2014 held in Los Angeles, U.S. one of the most prestigious science and engineering events in the world calendar.[10][11][12][13] [14]

Rakitha's research in 2013 in exploring effect of Young jack fruit extract (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum) extract to increase platelet count in wistar rats - An Effective Solution for Dengue Fever was selected as a National Winner of Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair(SLSEF) and also he represented Sri Lanka as a Finalist at Intel ISEF 2013 held in Arizona, USA.[15] [16]

In the year 2012 Rakitha invented a novel way of irrigation water conservation (Simplified And Low Costing Field Capacity Testing Device To Make The Soil And Plants Healthy & Wealthy) and it won a merit Award at Stockholm Junior Water Prize National Competition.

Also Rakitha had authored (together with his classmate Rananjaya Subash Gamage) - Effect of Young jack fruit extract (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum) extract to increase platelet count in wistar rats: Journal of Intel ISEF May 2013. Also Using Nano Technology as an Aniticancer Agent; Effect of Catechin coated Iron Oxide Nano particles on leukemic monocytes: Journal of Intel ISEF 2014 was authored by Rakitha.[17][18][19][20]
