Re:Zero (Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, Re: Life in a Different World from Zero) is a Japanese light novel series, written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka. Eight volumes have been published by Media Factory since January 25, 2014 under their MF Bunko J imprint. It has received three manga adaptations. An anime television series adaptation by White Fox began airing on April 4, 2016 with an hour-long special.
Characters
- Subaru Natsuki (ナツキ・スバル Natsuki Subaru)
- Voiced by: Yūsuke Kobayashi
- The main protagonist. On the way home from the convenience store, he suddenly finds himself transported into another world. He has the ability that he calls "Return by Death" to go back in time when he dies. Despite being a hikikomori and gamer in his real world, Subari does a bit of workout and seems to know basic hand-to-hand combat, making him not completely weak.
- Emilia (エミリア Emiria)
- Voiced by: Rie Takahashi
- The main female protagonist. She is a silver-haired half-elf girl who is one of the candidates to become the next ruler in the royal election. Subaru first meets her when her insignia is stolen by Felt as she needs to possess it to be eligible to participate in the election. She introduces herself as Satella when she and Subaru met during the first timeline before introducing herself by her real name when she got her insignia back.
- Puck (パック Pakku)
- Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama
- Emilia's familiar in the form of a cat. Its work time is from 9AM to 5PM, similar to a salaryman's.
- Felt (フェルト Feruto)
- Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki
- A 15 years old thief who grew up in a poor village. She steals Emilia's insignia to sell to the highest bidder.
- Old-Man Rom (ロム爺 Romu-ji)
- Voiced by: Mugihito
- Felt's longtime caretaker, who is like a grandfather for Felt. He runs a tavern and has storehouse full of stolen goods.
- Rem (レム Remu)
- Voiced by: Inori Minase
- An ogre and the twin sister of Ram. She still has a full horn, which grants her power. She does the cooking for the mansion, although her ability to cleaning is better than her sister.
- Ram (ラム Ramu)
- Voiced by: Rie Murakawa
- An ogre and the older twin sister of Rem. She lost her powers after her horn had been cut. She does the cleaning and laundry for the mansion. Ram is attracted to her master, Roswald.
- Beatrice (ベアトリス Beatorisu)
- Voiced by: Satomi Arai
- A mysterious mage who was hired by Roswald to keep his ancient magical tomes safe in his enormous library. She has the ability to warp any room in the mansion to this library whenever she chooses.
- Reinhard van Astrea (ラインハルト・ヴァン・アストレア Rainharuto van Asutorea)
- Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura
- An easy going royal knight who holds the title of Sword Sage/Sword Saint.
- Elsa Granhiert (エルザ・グランヒルテ Eruza Guranhiru)
- Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
- A bowel hunter who can sense fear in others. She is the first person to kill Subaru and trigger his time rewind ability. For reasons yet to be explained, she is after Emilia's insignia. She attempts to buy it from Felt and Rom, but she ends up killing them instead when negotiations fail during the first and second timelines. She is known for killing her 'prey' by cutting off their stomach. In the final timeline of the stolen insignia, she is defeated by Reinhard and retreats vowing to come after Subaru again.
- Roswaal L. Mathers (ロズワール・L・メイザース Rozuwāru L Meizāsu)
- Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu
- A Mangrave as well as an Imperial Wizard and Count who is a benefactor and sponsor for Emilia's bid for the throne. He is a highly influential individual who is also one of Lugminca's powerful mages.

Light novels
Re:Zero was initially serialized on the user-generated content site Shōsetsuka ni Narō from 2012 onwards, before being acquired by Media Factory. The first light novel volume was published on January 25, 2014 under their MF Bunko J imprint. As of March 2016, eight volumes have been published as well as two side story volumes. The light novels are licensed in English by Yen Press.[2]

Three manga adaptations, Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-Ichi-Shō: Ōto no Ichinichi-hen by Daichi Matsue, Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-Ni-Shō: Yashiki no Ishūkan-hen by Makoto Fugetsu, and Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Dai-San-Shō: Truth of Zero are published by Kadokawa, Square Enix, and Kadokawa, respectively. Yen Press announced its license to the manga in December 2015.[2]
Anime
An anime television series adaptation was announced by Kadokawa in July 2015.[13] The series is directed by Masaharu Watanabe and written by Masahiro Yokotani, with animation by the studio White Fox. Kyuta Sakai is serving as both character designer and as chief animation director.[14] The opening theme song is "Redo" by Konomi Suzuki, and the ending theme is "STYX HELIX" by MYTH&ROID.[15] A series of shorts featuring super deformed versions of the characters explaining how the world works, titled Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Break Time (Re:ゼロから始める休憩時間(ブレイクタイム)), will air on AT-X after each episode of the series, starting on April 8, 2016.[16]
The series premiered on April 4, 2016[lower-alpha 1] with an extended 50-minute first episode. It is being broadcast on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, and AT-X.[17] The series will be simulcast by Crunchyroll.[18]

On the way home from the convenience store, Subaru finds himself in another world. As he scrambles around trying to figure out where he is, he converses with a food vendor, and then gets attacked by three thugs in an alley. Subaru is saved by Emilia, who introduces herself as Satella, and he decides to return the favor by getting her insignia back that was stolen by Felt. Subaru and Emilia travel to the loot house Felt lives in only to find out that she was killed, and shortly after entering the house they are killed. Subaru's special ability then activates to rewind time and he finds himself back at the moment he was speaking with the vendor. He decides to head out to the loot house to negotiate with Felt and Rom for the insignia. The person who killed Subaru in the first timeline, Elsa, arrives and the two submit their offers for the insignia. Subaru offers his cell phone whose camera feature is perceived to be more valuable than the money Elsa has and Felt and Rom accepts his offer. However, Elsa kills everybody again when Subaru states his intention to give the insignia back to its original owner. Subaru revives back to the moment he was speaking with the vendor again. | ||

Subaru attempts to prevent the insignia from being stolen, but the plan fails and he gets himself killed by the thugs in the alley while chasing Felt. Having revived back when he spoke with the vendor again, Subaru changes his approach by not meeting Emilia and instead try to buy the insignia from Felt before Elsa could negotiate. In the alley, he is saved by Reinhard, and Subaru asks him to tell Emilia not to come to the loot house. As Subaru heads over to the loot house, he runs into with Elsa who took note about his unusual behavior. Subaru sees Felt and tells her what Rom said to him in the previous timeline about his cell phone. Rom appraises the phone and confirms its value, but Felt refuses to sell him the insignia without first hearing Elsa's offer due to his suspicious behavior. Someone comes knocking at the door and Subaru is worried that it is Elsa, but to his surprise it is Emilia, who he told not to come to the house. | ||

Shortly after Emilia arrives, Elsa appears and begins attacking. Puck gains the upper hand with his ice magic, but he is forced to go to sleep as he loses his powers at night. Felt is ordered to flee the house, Rom is severely wounded, and Emilia is getting exhausted while fighting Elsa. Reinhard then arrives and Elsa introduces herself as a bowel hunter. Emilia heals Rom's wounds while Reinhard keeps Elsa distracted, then Reinhard uses a van Astrea sword technique to defeat Elsa. However, Elsa survived the attack and she slashes Subaru, who had taken the hit intended for Emilia, before retreating. Emilia heals Subaru's wounds to save his life and at Subaru's request, she introduces herself as Emilia. Reinhard takes Felt with him claiming that he can't overlook her crime of stealing the insignia despite being off-duty. | ||

Subaru wakes up at Roswaal's mansion and meets Beatrice in the library after wandering in an endless loop in the hallway. Beatrice drains his mana causing him to fall unconscious. He then wakes up again with Ram and Rem in the bedroom. He then meets Roswaal, who tells him that Emilia needs the insignia in order to be a candidate to become the next king in the upcoming royal election. As gratitude for getting the insignia back, Subaru asks to work at the mansion as a butler. Working alongside Ram and Rem, Subaru struggles with all of his duties during his first five days on the job leading Roswaal to believe that he is better suited for another role with his carefree attitude. That night, Subaru talks to Emilia about his struggles and efforts on the job, and Emilia agrees to go on a date with him the next day to a village to watch the kids. However, when Subaru wakes up he finds himself back at the time he woke up with Ram and Rem in the room realizing that he died in his sleep that night. | ||

Subaru is revived and is reintroduced to Rem and Ram. Subaru in an attempt to figure out how he had died, attempts to recreate the timeline by trying to trigger events that had happened in the previous timeline which works only partially such as being taught to read and write by Ram which he did not experience in the previous timeline. During chores, Subaru and Rem's relationship deepens which seems to bother Ram. While out shopping, Rem shows to care about her sister to an abnormal level, being described by Subaru as "fanatical like a demon" where Rem then asks how Subaru thinks about demons. Afterwards, Emilia teaches Subaru since Rem and Ram are busy, where afterwards Subaru asks Emilia out on a date to a village to play with the kids and see the flower fields. Subaru attempts to stay up all night thinking about his actions in the new timeline, realizing he had fixed and missed certain events from the previous one and falls asleep. Subaru abruptly wakes up in the middle of the night and is violently sick. When he struggles to walk down a hallway, he is viciously attacked by an unseen assailant and killed once again. |
