Refugee (band)

For other uses, see Refugee (disambiguation).

Refugee was a progressive rock group formed by former The Nice members, bassist Lee Jackson and drummer Brian Davison, with keyboardist Patrick Moraz.

After The Nice, Jackson had formed Jackson Heights, while Davison formed his own band, Brian Davison's Every Which Way. After their fourth and final album Bump n' grind, Jackson Heights were looking for another keyboard player on tour, so Lee Jackson approached Patrick Moraz to ask him if he would be interested to join. But Moraz declined and rather proposed to form a new band instead, and with the help of his old mate from The Nice, drummer Brian Davison, Refugee was formed.

Refugee released one album on Charisma Records. The music was composed by Moraz with lyrics from Jackson. An archival live album recorded at Newcastle City Hall (a soundboard recording, taken from Davison's private collection) was released in 2007.

Without a deal for a second album and with tensions in the band, Moraz accepted an offer to join Yes in 1974 and, after a final few shows, Refugee split up. (According to Harry Shapiro in his biography The Mighty Shadow, Hammond organist Graham Bond had been considered as a possible replacement for Moraz until his untimely death in May 1974.)

Davison went on to work with Gong. Both Davison and Jackson would later retire from music, until the Keith Emerson/The Nice reunion shows in the 2000s.
