René Bernier

René Eugène Camilla Henri Alfred Albert Bernier (Saint-Gilles, 10 March 1905 - Elsene, 8 September 1984) was a Belgian composer and music teacher.

Biography

René Bernier was a son of the painters Géo Bernier en Jenny Hoppe and a student of Paul Gilson. After completing his studies, Bernier became a teacher of music history at the Conservatory of Liège. Afterwards he also worked at the Music Academy of Brussels. Just like the other students of Gilson, Bernier was a member of the group Les Synthétistes. Other members of this group included : Francis de Bourguignon, Théo De Joncker, Marcel Poot, Maurice Schoemaker, Jules Strens and Robert Otlet. Bernier became a member of the Royal Flemish Academy in 1963.
