Renholdningsselskabet af 1898

Renholdningsselskabet af 1898 (Danish for "The 1898 Cleansing Company"), commonly known as R98, is a Danish company owned by Copenhagen and Frederiksberg municipalities. It services the people there with collecting waste, garden waste, bulky waste, recycling glass, recycling paper, hazardous waste, hospital waste and other special waste sections.

The company started in 1898 under the name Kjøbenhavns Grundejeres Renholdningsselskab, shortened to KGR. Then its task to empty and wash latrine buckets, in the jargon called "removal of night soil". The buckets were carried to Amager, where they built a cleaner station. From this Amager got the unattractive nickname Lorteøen (= "the shit island").

In 1984 the container department Renoflex was eliminated from R98 because of problems with solutions for industrial waste and garbage collection outside the coverage.

In 2003 tenders were invited for a part of the collection tasks, specifically collection of garden refuse and bulky refuse in containers. This was due to (for instance) dissatisfaction from other haulage contractors because the task without supplies was carried out by above mentioned Renoflexes, and they certain places thought it was unfair. This brought a splitting up at two districts (north and south) that today (2006) are serviced by two separate companies.

In 2005 R98's 30-year contract with the municipalities about the collection of refuse collection was declared illegal in a case. Here afterwards the planning of the call for tenders of this area started, and at the same time one agreed to that the service in the course of time was to be transferred to be a municipal task. Because of the task's size the work at stages is invited tenders for over a short number of years.

In 2011 the company should be finally eliminated, and the necessary staff should be transferred to the two municipalities.

R98 is a non-profit company and must therefore not make money on handling of waste.
