Rhombodera valida is a species of praying mantis found in Asia and nearby islands.[2]
Etymology
In Latin "valida" means strong, powerful or valid.[3][5] Rhomboid shape. In Greek dera means neck.[6]
Distribution
Native to China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia on Java, Moluccas, and Timor.[2]
Description
This is one of the largest species in the Rhombodera genus, with adult females averaging 10 Centimeters in total length. large female can reach up to over 12 cm. Rhombodera valida is distinguishable from its cousin Rhombodera stalii by its overall darker green coloration. Rhombodera valida has a broader, sub-circular, rhomboidal pronotum than Rhombodera basalis.[3]
Behavior
This large mantis is a powerful ambush predator, consuming a wide variety of possible prey, from large arthropods to small mammals.
