Biography
Jay is a self-taught musician. He began writing music at age 14 and left school at 16 to train at a local recording studio as a sound engineer.[1]
Jay has written a book on the music industry titled How to Get Your Music in Film & TV.[2]
Works and media appearances
Jay's debut album, This Is What I Live For, was released in 2009 on Burning Petals Records.[3] The album featured guest performances from members of Britain's longest-established symphony orchestra, The Hallé, as well as from Grammy Award-winning uilleann pipes player Davy Spillane.[4]
This Is What I Live For was reviewed in MUSO magazine [5] and has received attention from leading music blogs The Silent Ballet [6][7] and Headphone Commute.[8]
His second album as Richard Anthony Jay, Imperfect Beauty, was released on July 4, 2011; also on Burning Petals Records.[9][10] Some tracks from Imperfect Beauty were previously released by Jay under the pseudonym "Marble Hill", a side project incorporating chill-out and classical influences. Tracks from this project were selected by British Phonographic Industry for their 'British Music at MIDEM 2007' CD[11] and by Phunctional Loungin for their 'Champagne Loungin Vol.4' release.[12]
In 2011, Jay was interviewed on the radio program Echoes, where he spoke about his album Imperfect Beauty.[13] He was also featured in an interview on Classic FM.[14] Jay's work has been heard on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction,[15] BBC Radio 2,[16] and regional BBC Radio programming.[17] His work has also been ranked in the top 20 on Zone Music Reporter's airplay charts[18] and on DMC World Magazine's weekly charts.[19] His music has been heard in TV shows such as BBC's Top Gear and Sky TV's Obese: A Year to Save My Life [20]
In 2015, Jay released a digital E.P Written In The Ground,[21] collaborated with choreographer Jack Philp on a new dance work [22] and wrote the score to Catherine Linstrum's short film Things That Fall From The Sky.[23]
