Richard Jackson (born 18 April 1980) is an English former professional footballer.

Career

Scarborough

Jackson was born in Whitby and began his career at the then Natiowide Division Three club, Scarborough, as a trainee in August 1997.[1] He made his first appearance for the club in a league game in November 1997 against Doncaster Rovers but only made two appearances in the 1997–98 season.[1] In March 1998, he signed his first professional contract at Scarborough but a year later, moved to the FA Carling Premiership club, Derby County for a fee of £30,000, having made 22 league and cup appearances for Scarborough in the 1998–99 season.[1]

Derby County

Jackson joined Derby County in March 1999.[1] His first game for Derby came in a 0–0 draw against Newcastle United in May 2000, which was shortly followed by an appearance in a 4–0 defeat to Chelsea.[1] He made three appearances in the 2000–01 season followed by seven appearances in the 2001–02 season, at the end of which Derby were relegated to the Nationwide Division One.[1] He broke into the first team on a regular basis in the 2002–03 season, during which he made 21 appearances, and was offered a new contract at the end of the season.[1][2] He consolidated his place in the first team in the 2003–04 season, making 37 appearances, and signing a new two-year contract in May 2004.[3] He made 20 appearances in the 2004–05 season until he suffered a groin injury in a game against Leeds United in January 2005, which ruled him out of first-team action until May as Derby reached the end of season play-off games.[1][4] Jackson made 27 appearances in the 2005–06 season, which was interrupted by another groin injury that saw him ruled out of first-team action for all of September and October 2005 and a hamstring injury that ruled him out for several weeks in the spring of 2006.[1][5][6] By this time, Jackson was the longest serving player at Derby and, in January 2006, signed a contract keeping him at the club until the summer of 2008.[7] However, he made only seven further appearances for Derby in the 2006–07 season and in August 2007, he moved to Luton Town on a free transfer.[1][8]

Luton Town

Jackson joined Luton Town on a two-year contract in August 2007.[8] His contract was terminated by mutual consent on 21 August 2008.[9]

Hereford United

On 4 September 2008 Richard signed a one-year professional contract with League One side Hereford United. On 22 October 2009, Jackson was set to sign for Darlington as one of four new players brought in by manager Steve Staunton but Jackson's own deal fell through.[10]

Burton Albion

After dropping into non-league to play a couple of games for his hometown club Whitby Town, Richard joined up with Burton Albion on a month's contract on 4 December 2009. Jackson signed for former Derby & Luton team mate Paul Peschisolido to cover injuries to Ryan Austin & Andrew Corbett.[11]

At the end of the 2010/2011 season, after an injury ravaged season, Jackson was released from the club.[12]
