RingPlus
RingPlus (Ring+, R+) is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator that runs on the Sprint Network. Their goal is to provide low-cost and free cell phone plans and generate revenue through Ringback Tone Advertising
History
RingPlus was founded in 2006. The current CEO is Karl Seelig. In a report released December 2015, RingPlus reported 44% monthly growth or 880% for 2015, but did not state the number of paid vs free enrollments.[1]
Concern Over Sustainability
RingPlus first started this concept of free phone service in 2013. By mid 2014, almost everybody had their accounts cancelled.[2]
Some believed this was due to RingPlus losing money[3] while others thought that it was possibly just because devices were not authorized to be activated from Boost or Virgin. Ringplus has occasionally told users that they were being cancelled due to not having enough advertisers in their area.[4] Since February 15, 2015 Sprint has allowed unlocking of all domestic devices.[5]
RingPlus began offering free accounts again on June 13, 2015.[6]
Concerns have been recently voiced with the influx of more and more free plans with high usage limits. These have been addressed by the CEO of RingPlus saying:
"I have received several inquiries, causing speculation about what I said or didn’t say. So to be clear, RingPlus can’t guarantee a plan will exist forever (just like any other telecom big or small). But I can say we don’t have any plans to make changes to or cancel any plan for existing Members.
Our goal remains to provide free unlimited cell service to all Members sponsored by alternative revenue streams. The current flash promo, as well as the Continuum free plan, is intended to send a clear message that we pursue our goal aggressively."[7]
