Rita Amada de Jesus

Rita Amada de Jesus (1848–1913) was a Portuguese nun and founder of the Institute of Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.[1] She was born into a religious family.

At the age of 29 years, she joined the Sisters of Mercy. On September 24, 1880 she founded the Institute of the Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph to dedicate her time to the care of poor and abandoned girls. In 1910, after the establishment of the Republic of Portugal, there was a persecution of Catholics, and so together with the sisters the children were safely taken to their parents. She died at the age of sixty-four. On December 20, 2003, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her venerable. She was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 28, 2006.[2]
