Jefferson Riverport International

Jefferson Riverport International ( commonly called Riverport) is a planned industrial community on the Ohio River, is home to companies engaged in manufacturing and/or distribution. It is one of the few inland industrial/port sites in the nation with single-line haul by three railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern and Paducah & Louisville.[1]

Another important transportation service vital to the operation of these companies is the United Parcel Service whose Worldport is located in Louisville.

Industrial park

Companies in Riverport are in such diverse fields as plastics molding and fabrication; steel processing; manufacturing liquid filtration systems and specialty pipe; acrylic resin and polymer emulsion production; stamping and assembly for the appliance industry; manufacturing custom fiberglass products for industry; clothing manufacturing; steel stamping and slitting; tool and die manufacturing and repair; design, production and installation of fiber optic cable support systems; plus a variety of distribution-related activities, including nine national distribution centers. Many of these firms have parent companies outside the United States.[2]

Foreign trade zone

Foreign Trade Zone #29, with Customs clearance in Louisville, offers a prime opportunity for manufacturing or distribution firms to develop additional U.S. and overseas markets.[3]

The FTZ encompasses the intermodal port site and the industrial park. The zone includes buildings for manufacturing and warehousing. Breakbulk and containerized shipments can be handled easily. Companies may take advantage of zone benefits by utilizing the general purpose zone warehouses or by activating all or a portion of their own building. Companies located in the park have activated over one million square feet of FTZ space.[3]

FTZ status offers advantages to industrial park tenants that are not available elsewhere. In an increasingly global market, prudent companies should determine whether establishing operations in the FTZ would provide them with a financial edge in today's competitive market.[3]
