Rob Bellamy (born May 30, 1985) is an American professional ice hockey right winger who is currently an unrestricted free agent. He most recently played for the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL. Bellamy was originally drafted 92nd overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
Rob Bellamy was born in Providence, Rhode Island on May 30, 1985. He lived in Riverside, RI until age six and then he moved with his family to Westfield, Massachusetts in 1991 where they still reside. Growing up, he was surrounded by the influence of his parents and his siblings, along with his extended family. He excelled in both school and in athletics. Playing team sports were part of everyday life along with climbing trees, jumping off of rope swings and playing at the beach (one of his favorite places). As a teenager, he began to focus on hockey as his primary sport where eventually he went on to be a Maine Black Bear and play at the University of Maine in Orono. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2004. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Phantoms, Adirondack Phantoms, Nottingham Panthers, Elmira Jackals and the South Carolina Stingrays. He has always had a strong work ethic and an incredible passion for everything he does. Hockey is a rough sport but Rob has always showed compassion for his team mates and for his competition.
Rob loved music from a young age. He grew up listening to his parent’s music and being influenced by artists such as Dave Mathews, The Eagles, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, The Beatles, Van Morrison, and many more. On his 23rd birthday he asked for a guitar. From the minute he picked up that guitar he was hooked on learning how to play. While in his senior year at Maine he worked on learning chords during his down time away from school and hockey. Rob’s friends and teammates began to encourage him to sing some songs and would put in requests to have him learn a new cover. This was the start of something new for him. After college, he went on to play professional hockey and, again, during his down time he would practice and try learning new chords. Rob soon discovered people enjoyed his raspy voice was getting requests to sing. During his professional career Rob made a bold move and moved to Nottingham England to play overseas. Just before leaving England, Rob played in his first ever public appearance “One Night Only” at the Canal House. He played in front of a crowd of over 150 people and it was there in that pub that he knew this is what he wanted to do. That appearance ignited his creativity and he began to write songs. After returning from England, Bellamy landed in Elmira, NY where he found a home for three years playing for the Elmira Jackals in the Ottawa Senators farm organization. While there he gained a new group of teammates that loved his music and continued to encourage him to play for them and write songs. He would bring his guitar on the road trip and have jam sessions on the bus where all the boys would join in and sing along. Rob go to practices in the mornings and then retreat to his room where he would spend hours recording on his computer the material that he was writing. He started to put songs up on Reverb Nation so he could share his music with others. While in Elmira, Rob learned of a family that had been in a tragic car accident. He decided to make up a CD of some covers and of one of his originals. He figured if he sold a few at some of his games he would be able to help the family while at the same time getting his name out there. He had no idea he would sell so many CD’s and that he had so many fans. It was a huge success and it was a great feeling to be able to do something for the family. Bellamy would spend summers in Kennebunkport, Maine and during mid summer of 2013 he found a few buddies to practice with. They only played together a few weeks before Bellamy had to head back to Elmira for hockey. In April 2014 Bellamy returned to Kennebunkport and played again with guitarists Mike Pierce, and Phil Reid. They had instant chemistry and wrote several songs together. They also played a few times at a little bar called “The Hive” in Kennebunk, Maine. Bellamy received an invitation to perform in Corning, NY at the Glass Festival during Memorial Day weekend. Without any real experience he still jumped at the opportunity. Bellamy, Pierce and Reid packed up Pierce’s truck with equipment and made the trip to New York. They were the opening band for a Journey cover band called “DSB”. This was an incredible experience. That experience in Corning was the real turning point for Bellamy. He wanted more and he knew that he had to get around musicians and people that could help guide him. He knew he had to find a way to get to Nashville and surround himself with people that could help him pursue his dream of being a singer/songwriter. Rob left Elmira and headed back to Kennebunkport to practice more music. He had plans to head to Nashville in the fall of 2014. That would change. Playing hockey your whole life becomes a part of your soul. Rob was torn on what to do. He didn’t have a contract and he still wanted to play. The end of summer was near and frustration started to set in. He wanted to head to Nashville but his passion of hockey was still there and it was difficult to give that up. What to do? Because most coaches knew this of Bellamy offers were not coming in and Bellamy decided to pack his car and head to Nashville. While packing his car Bellamy received a phone call from the South Carolina Stingrays and he landed himself quite a gig in Charleston, South Carolina. Hockey is a funny thing. The team comrade, the friendships, the hard work, the dedication, the triumphs, the defeats, the long bus trips, the early morning skates, the work outs, the discipline and the grueling schedule - they get you prepared for life or maybe a music career if your willing to sacrifice yet again! So Bellamy headed south but it wasn’t to Tennessee, it was to Charleston, SC. Bellamy would embark on arguable one of his favorite seasons, and favorite teams that he has ever been a part of. In Charleston, Bellamy was more focused then ever when it came to songwriting, spending almost all of his free time working out lyrics and melodies. Bellamy now resides in Nashville, TN. The finish of a long hockey journey and the start of a new chapter, and the next set of goals and dreams. From one bus to another, from one road traveled to yet another road about to be paved. What’s in store is lots of hard work and from what I can tell that seems to be the norm every single day for Rob Bellamy. Nashville will be a better place when they gain another young talent.

Family
Rob's sister Kacey Bellamy is a 2x Olympian for The United States Women's Ice Hockey team. She attended college at the University of New Hampshire, and now she currently coaches at Merrimack College while she is still training for her 3rd Olympics. His brother Corey Bellamy was also a professional hockey player who played for the Columbus Cottonmouth, The Huntsville Havoc, and the Mississippi River Kings in the SPHL. Corey and Rob both played together for a portion of the 2013-2014 season with the Elmira Jackals. Rob's other sister Lindsey Bellamy still resides in Westfield along with his parents Bob and Maura Bellamy, where she works has a secretary in a Nursing Home. Rob's parents both grew up in the East Providence, RI area where they met in 1984. They were married in 1985 and are still happily married today.
