Robert D. Marcus

Robert D. Marcus is a business executive in the communications industry.

Current executive roles

Marcus serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Time Warner Cable Inc. He has been in these roles since the beginning of 2014. He became Director in July 2013. He also holds the role of Director at: Equifax Inc., National Cable Satellite Corporation and Cable Television Laboratories Inc. He sits on the Advisory Board at Canoe Ventures, LLC., the Museum of the Moving Image, and the New Alternatives for Children (NAC).


Employment history

Before taking on his lead executive role at the firm, Marcus held the role of Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity, Time Warner “invested to support future growth, enhanced its network and improved critical infrastructure,” alongside Marcus’ commitment “to creating a customer-centric organization, with a mission to connect Time Warner Cable’s customers to the world—simply, reliably and with superior service.” He was also responsible for the Time Warner Cable’s derivation from Time Warner Inc., its shift to a publicly traded company, as well as various major mergers and acquisitions. In addition, Time Warner Cable launched a disciplined capital allocation strategy that gained such a good reputation, many other S&P 500 companies followed suit.[1]

Other principal roles Marcus held at the firm and its subsidiaries include: President, Senior Executive Vice President, Senior Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions, Acting Chief Financial Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Head of Business Strategy Development and Treasurer, Senior VP of Content Businesses, Executive VP of Business Development and VP of Mergers and Acquisitions. He joined Time Warner in 1998.[2]

Prior to Time Warner, Marcus still had a connection to the firm, being a principal outside corporate counsel. Other roles he held in the past include: Director of TW Telecom Inc., Editor of the Columbia Law Review.[3]

For seven years Marcus practiced law at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

Education

Marcus has a J.D. from Columbia Law School (where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar) and a BA from Brown University, graduating magna cum laude.

Recognition

Marcus has been featured regularly in the media for the global impact he has had on the entire communications industry. For example, every year CableFAX The Magazine puts him on the list of most influential executives. Multichannel News editors entitled him “Executive of the Year” in 2010. Four years later he received the Steven J. Ross Humanitarian Award by UJA-Federation of New York.
