Robert Edward "Bob" Mulcahy III (born 1932) was the director of athletics at Rutgers University.
Biography
Mulcahy attended Millburn High School in Millburn, New Jersey, and[1] graduated from Villanova University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) in History.[2] Since arriving in 1998, Mulcahy is noted for having raised the Athletic Department's endowment, in obtaining funding from the New Jersey legislature for a massive renovation of Rutgers athletic facilities, and in getting increased television coverage for the Rutgers' Scarlet Knights football, long regarded as one of the worst programs in NCAA Division I-A competition.[2] In 2008, however, "The Rutgers Mess" hit the press, and disclosures were made concerning the handling of Athletics Department finances in connection with investigative reporting by the Star Ledger. He was fired in December 2008 by then president Richard Mccormick under pressure resulting from the Star Ledger investigations.[3] though he claimed to have done nothing wrong.[4]
Mulcahy came to Rutgers on April 15, 1998, after a 19-year tenure as President and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.[2]
Prior to his position with NJSEA, Mulcahy was involved in government at the municipal and state level. At age 23, he ran successfully for Mendham Councilman about a year after moving to the township. In 1970, he became Mayor. He was appointed in 1976 to the state's first Corrections Commissioner.
Mulcahy was a longtime resident of Mendham Borough.[5]
