Robert Wayne Gibson (November 14, 1932 – March 26, 1966) was a Canadian politician, who represented Kenora in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1962 and 1966[1] first as a Liberal member and, after the 1963 provincial general election, as a He was born in Kenora in 1932.[2]
Offices
Gibson was first elected in a by-election resulting from the death of the long-serving Liberal-Labour MPP, Albert Wren. Despite the popularity, in northwest Ontario, for the Liberal-Labour brand, Gibson ran as a Liberal in the by-election. As a means of marginalizing the NDP candidate, in the 1963 general election, Gibson ran as a Liberal-Labour candidate and defeated the PC candidate, Leo Bernier, by 840 votes. He served as an Opposition back-bencher facing majority PC governments under Premier John Robarts. During his first term, Gibson sat on at least eight Standing Committees of the Legislative Assembly, simultaneously, and on four during his second term. Gibson died on March 26, 1966 of a pancreas infection,[3] and Leo Bernier was elected in the by-election that followed.
