Robert Šulgan (born 19 April 1975, Třinec, Czech Republic) is a Czech professional heavyweight boxer and a holder of the Czech Heavyweight title.
Early career
Šulgan started boxing at the age of sixteen for an amateur club in the nearby town, Frýdek-Místek. After completing his national service he left for North Carolina, in the US, where he worked and competed in amateur boxing tournaments.
Professional
Following his successes in the local amateur boxing tournaments he decided to turn professional in 1999, and soon after returned to the Czech Republic. After picking up a number of wins at several venues around the country against Czech and Slovak opponents he won the vacant Czech heavyweight title in a bout against Marek Oravský in 2002, having lost to Oravsky several months prior.[1] Also in 2002 he was the sparring partner to well known polish boxer Przemysław Saleta who was preparing for an EBU heavyweight title fight with German-Turkish boxer Sinan Şamil Sam.[2]
Since then he's boxed the likes of Tomasz Bonin, Michael Sprott[3][4] and Alexander Petkovic.[5][6]
An opportunity arose in 2004 to fight an established and known heavyweight boxer Cedric Boswell at the Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, US, a potential breakthrough for Czech boxing. The fight was cancelled however.[7][8]
In 2010 he was due to take part in a charity boxing event called Night of Heroes held at the Millennium theatre in Prague, endorsed by UNICEF to raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake. The lineup was fronted by Czech champion Lukáš Konečný pitted against Romanian Ionut Trandafir Illie.[9] Other participating fighters included Tomy Altmann from Germany, Nick Okoth and Artsiom Salomka from Belarus. The event received live coverage on Eurosport.

His father was Slovak. He's based in the city of Brno in Moravia but lives in Olomouc.
