Rocklin High School is a public high school in Rocklin, California a northeastern suburb located near Sacramento, California.

Visual and performing arts

Instrumental music

Most of the RHS instrumental reputation comes from its extracurricular groups, such as the pep band, who is seen at various events around Rocklin, and during most football and basketball games. In 2001 the RHS Symphonic Band received a rating of "Unanimous Superior" and was chosen as "Best Overall Band" at the Music In The Parks festival in Anaheim. On May 20, 2006, the RHS Symphonic Band received a "Superior" rating at the Music In The Parks festival at Disneyland, as well as the award for the "Best Overall Band" at the festival. The programs are headed by Tom Douglass. Most recently, on October 30th, Rocklin High School unveiled its new marching band, and was awarded the KCRA Band Of The Week Honor.

Choir

RHS Directors of a Vocal and Choral Activities

RHS Choral and Vocal Department is currently led by returning RHS conductor Shawn Spiess. (Previous choral conductor Meredith Hawkins began teaching at Orinda High School in 2013.) Participation in the two advanced choirs, Advanced Women's Ensemble and Chamber Choir, is by audition only. RHS choirs perform in various school and community events, and have achieved both gold and silver levels at Heritage Music Festivals. In 2004 RHS Honor Choir was one of seven choirs chosen from around the nation to perform as the National Youth Choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City under the direction of renowned choral conductor Paul Salamunovich. In addition, RHS Honor Choir was one of the two top choirs chosen to perform on its own under the direction of then conductor, Shawn Spiess. In 2010, RHS Chamber Choir took home gold recognition and placed third overall at Heritage Music Festivals. The Advanced Women's Ensemble also received gold recognition and placed first in their category. The choirs at RHS have also had opportunities to perform in Hawaii, San Francisco, Los Angeles under the direction of Conductor Composer Randal Stroope as well as performing with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra in Vancouver, Canada in 2002. Plans are being made right now to return to New York City performing at Carnegie Hall in the Spring of 2015.

Theatre

Rocklin High School has a Theatre Arts program led by Cinny Toepke, who has been teaching at Rocklin since the school's opening in 1993. Rocklin High School offers four theatre classes: Drama one is an introductory theatre course. Theatre 2/3 is an intermediate, two-year course with a curriculum that alternates every other year. Theatre four is the advanced theatre class. Technical theatre focuses on the "behind-the-scenes" aspect of theatre including set building. Traditionally, three theatrical productions are performed each year: the Fall Play, the Winter Musical, and the Spring Comedy. The Theatre Four class participates in the Lenaea Festival at California State University, Sacramento. Rocklin High School has a history of placing well at drama festivals.

Dance

The Dance program, as well as the performing Dance Team (previously called "Rhythm in Blue") are led by instructor Abby Huber. Four levels of classes are offered, as well as a course in partner (ballroom) dancing.

Athletics

In 2007-2008, Rocklin High School won section titles in Boys Basketball and then came up one game short of the state playoffs, losing to Fairfield. In 2008-2009, Rocklin Boys Basketball won the Nor-Cal Championships. They continued onto the statewide Division 2 Championship, losing to Eisenhower. This is the farthest the storied Rocklin High Basketball program has gone.The Boys Soccer team also won Sections. In 2008 the Boys Golf team went to state for the second year in a row after being the first ever team in Rocklin High School history to win the Nor-Cal Championship. The 2006-2007 Boys Baseball Team won the Sac Joaquin section DII title over fellow Sierra Foothill League member, Granite Bay. The Boys Golf Team won the Section title as well that year. The RHS varsity boys soccer team won the 2005, 2007, and 2009 Section Championship.[1] During the fall 2005 season, the RHS Varsity football team progressed all the way to the division finals, playing against Del Oro. 2005 was the first year in RHS history that the football team made it to the playoffs.

The RHS wrestling team experienced some local success in 2002 when the team won the Section Dual tournament. That year, RHS sent three wrestlers to the state tournament (Eric Morgan (119), Eliot Kelley (160), and Michael Gomez (275)).

In 2005, the RHS cross-country team placed 4th at the Division II State Meet.
In 2009, the RHS cross-country team placed 16th at the Division II State Meet.

Former RHS sprinter Greg Lott now serves as head track and field coach for the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York.

In 2009, the RHS boys basketball team played in the California State Championship game.

In 2009, once again the RHS boys baseball team won the Sac Joaquin section DII championship over league rival Granite Bay, who they also beat in their last section title in 06-07.

On December 11, 2009, the varsity football team beat rivals Del Oro for a rematch to claim the Sac-Joaquin Section title. It is the first section title in football in school history. Rocklin went on to play Servite in Division II State Championships and ended up runner up in Division II.

Other achievements

Rocklin High has an award winning engineering program. Students used to compete annually in the SkillsUSA competitions, and have earned gold medals at the Regional, State, and National levels.

During the 2006 competitions, Spenser Estrada advanced to state level, winning dual gold metals in Technical Combination Drafting and Job Interview, advancing to national level, eventually winning a national gold medal in Technical Combination Drafting.

The 2005-2006 Rocklin High Yearbook placed first in the 2006 NSPA Nashville Convention Best-In-Show for the 325+ page category.[2]

It 2007, Rocklin's theatre four class won eight separate awards at the Lenaea Festival held at California State University, Sacramento.

Administration

Since Rocklin High School was established in 1993, they have had four principals.

In November 2014, David Bills announced that he will step down as principal, and an interim principal will take over in January 2015. Davis Stewart will take over principal duties starting in the 2015-16 school year.
