Founded in October 2006, the Rogue Rollergirls, known as FRD or Fayetteville Roller Derby, Inc.^[4] is an all-women, flat-track roller derby league with a stated mission to growing as a stable organization of inspiring, confident athletes, and positive female role models. FRD strives to give back to the local community, while playing and promoting the sport of roller derby. They are a non-profit organization, managed and operated by the skaters.

Located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, FRD is a newly appointed member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) apprentice program.^[5]

League history

The Rogue Rollergirls were founded in October 2006 by former Gem City Rollergirls and Carolina Rollergirls skater, Rachel Sumja, aka Bull Lee. The inaugural bout of the Rogue Rollergirls was held in March 2007 between Rogue's two home teams: the Cherry Belles and the Black Mambas. Both team names were retired in May 2009, at the Battle Royale, which saw the return of many former Rogue skaters for Bull Lee's retirement bout.^[6]

Getting started

After watching the TV show Rollergirls on A&E, Bull Lee's life changed. She immediately felt the need to play. After playing for the Gem City Rollergirls in Ohio and Carolina Rollergirls in Raleigh, NC, her husband was deployed to Afghanistan out of Fort Bragg, NC. She didn't have time to commute to Raleigh during that time and there wasn't a closer league so she started one herself in 2006.^[7]

League governance

The league is governed by a board of directors, elected officers, and committee chairs. Skater participation is necessary. Officer positions include President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Committee chairs include Community Outreach, Fundraising, Social Events, Public Relations, Sponsorship, Bout Productions, Recruitment, Training, and Sunshine Committee.^[8] League meetings are held quarterly. Although non-skaters (e.g., referees and other support staff) can serve on committees, only active skater members can vote on league issues.
