Playing career

Howell first played for the Melbourne Jets of the Victorian Ice Hockey Association in 2001. In 2003 Howell signed with the Melbourne Ice of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL).[1] He remained at the club until the end of the 2004 season before leaving the team. During his first season in the Gold Coast Howell competed in 24 games scoring seven goals and ten assists which is his best season in terms of points.[1] In February 2011 the Blue Tongues announced that Howell's contract had been extended and he was named the team captain for the 2011 AIHL season.[2]

Howell was first called up to represent Australia in 2001 where he joined the national senior team to compete in the 2001 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A tournament being held in Majadahonda, Spain. Australia finished third in the tournament while Howell scored four points during his five games.[3] Howell missed selection in 2002 but was recalled to the senior team in 2003 to compete in the 2003 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A tournament being held in Seoul, South Korea. Australia finished in fourth place while Howell managed only a single assist during the tournament.[4]
