Round University Ranking (RUR Ranking) is a world university ranking, assessing effectiveness of 750 leading universities in the world based on 20 distributed among 4 key dimension areas: teaching, research, international diversity, financial sustainability.[1][2] The RUR Rankings publisher is an independent RUR Rankings Agency, geographically located in Moscow, Russia.[3]
About the project
RUR Ranking is aimed to provide transparent, comprehensive analytical system for benchmarking and evaluation universities across the boarders to the widest possible audience: students, analysts, decision-makers in the field of higher education development both at individual institutional and at the national level.
The following principles were laid down to the RUR Ranking:
- Sample stability, reduced volatility in the positions and scores of universities;
- Equal distribution of the indicators between dimension areas;
- Equal weightings within the dimension areas;
- Inclusivity: any institution has the opportunity to participate in the rating,
Round University Ranking has been publishing since 2010. 750 leading world universities in the world were evaluated in RUR Ranking 2015 edition, including 91 higher education institutions of the BRICS economies.
The raw data for RUR Ranking is provided within a special annual survey run by Thomson Reuters - Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP). The data for GIPP is collected annually in April - May.
Methodology
Round University Ranking is designed to benchmark performance of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) across the globe according to 20 indicators distributed to 4 areas. RUR Ranking indicators are grouped in appliance with principal university missions:
- Teaching
- Research
- International Diversity
- Financial Sustainability
After careful evaluation was chosen Institutional Profiles – an annually updated database within the online platform InCites provided by Thomson Reuters.[4] There are more than a hundred of unique indicators within this database, so it allows to choose appropriate indicators for any area of university activity.

Notes:
- The data used in the ranking is with a 3-year delay with respect to the year of publication rankings. For example, RUR Ranking 2015 is based on 2012 data.
- Reputational data (indicators 5, 10, 14) is collected in a special survey, conducted annually by Thomson Reuters in the project GIPP - Academic Reputation Survey. Every year in this survey is involved, on average, 10,000 scientists, pre-selected by using Web of Science Core Collection. Respondent indicates their subject area and can then select up to 15 best universities in the field of both teaching and research in the subject area in which the respondent works.
- Bibliometric indicators are calculated using InCites analytical system. Documents type: Article, Review, Note.
- Period accounting annual publications (indicators 9, 13). For example: for RUR Ranking 2015 publications from 2012 were used (except Normalized Citation Impact indicator where 5 years publications and citations periods are used.
- Period accounting citations from the year of accounting publications and ending date of the last update InCites system at the time of discharge. On average, it is 2.5-3 years. It is important to note that regardless of the accounting period, citations, comparable data, as number of citations increases in proportion to the period under consideration for all publications.
- The period of registration of publications for the normalized citation (Normalized Citation Impact): 5 years (eg, 2008-2012 rankings for 2015 RUR). Period accounting citation - before the last update InCites. On average, it 6-6.5 years.
