Roxtec is a company specialising in the development and manufacture of cable and pipe seals (sometimes known as multi cable transits). Roxtec’s products are designed to seal cables and pipes in order to protect buildings and equipment from fire, water, gas, dust, vibrations, electro-magnetic disturbances, vermin, and the risk of explosion. The company’s main operating sectors include power, marine, oil and gas, telecoms, construction, original equipment manufacture, and the process industries.

Roxtec is based in Sweden and has subsidiaries worldwide as well as a network of distributors.[1] It is owned by Mellby Gård Industri and the CEO is Mikael Helmerson. Roxtec International AB is certified in accordance with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. It was founded in Sweden in 1990 after the invention of Multidiameter, a technical solution which has module layers that are removable for adaptability to cables and pipes of different sizes.

Roxtec UK was established in the UK in 2005, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Roxtec International AB. Roxtec Limited’s head office is in Bury, Greater Manchester, and is responsible for operations in the UK and Ireland. The Managing Director is Graham O’Hare. Roxtec UK Limited has a quality system which is ISO 9001:2008 approved.[2]

Oil and Gas

Roxtec works in the oil and gas sectors both in the UK and internationally. It is accredited by FPAL to work in the UK North Sea,[3] and has subscribed to the UKCS Oil and Gas industry Supply Chain Code of Practice which is administered by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).[4]

Its UK work includes a project refurbishing a highly advanced gas testing laboratory for Total at its St Fergus Gas Terminal[5] based 60 miles north of Aberdeen. Roxtec supplied special multi cable transit seals to the laboratory with each transit protecting up to ten power or data cables. Roxtec's transit seals help maintain the Ex conformity of the process areas.

Roxtec supplied Ensco PLC,[6] a global offshore drilling specialist. Roxtec’s multi-cable transit seals were used to upgrade offshore drilling rigs in the North Sea to protect them from the risks of jet fire, flooding and explosion.

Roxtec has worked to supply Australia’s biggest gas project,[7] the Chevron operated Gorgon Project, on Barrow Island, Western Australia. Roxtec supplied cable penetration seals with built in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to protect the plant’s electrical systems. The seals are installed in the modular instrumentation buildings to protect control systems as well as cable and pipe penetrations for the blast walls and floors in the substations.

Roxtec was contracted by Agip,[8] to supply products to one of the world’s largest oil fields - the Kashagan project off the coast of Kazakhstan. Roxtec provided cable transit seals to onshore processing facilities for the Kashagan oilfield. Roxtec products were used to seal the instrument control cables into the satellite instrumentation control buildings, the oil processing facility, gas processing facility and sulphur processing buildings. Roxtec supplied two semi-submersible drilling rigs being built for the offshore specialist SeaDragon.[9] In total Roxtec supplied more than one thousand cable and pipe transits for each rig with products used on the rigs, hull, bare deck unit, topsides, living quarters and process units.

Power

Roxtec’s work in the power transmission sector covers nuclear, renewable energy, clean fuels and power and distribution.

Renewable Energy

To 2013, Roxtec has been used on every offshore windfarm in Europe.[10] Roxtec seals cables in the generator system, the switch room, the converter, the tower, the nacelle, the transition pieces and the control cabinets.

Roxtec worked with Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd, which supplied and installed the two offshore substations for the first 630MW phase of London Array.[11] Roxtec designed bespoke products which seal low and high voltage cables as they pass through a wall or deck.

Roxtec’s cable sealing products were utilised on the Greater Gabbard wind farm off the Suffolk coast. Specifically for this project Roxtec developed a bespoke multi cable non bolted, non welded, transit system to be used in the foundation transition pieces for all 140 of the 3.6MW wind turbines.

Nuclear

Roxtec seals are used to seal cables and utility systems in new and decommissioned nuclear power generation plants, research facilities and military establishments.[12][13]

Transmission and Distribution

Roxtec’s work in the power transmission and distribution sector[14] includes work in substations and Interconnector projects. Substations are used to distribute electricity from source to end user. Roxtec is used to seal power cables in the cable trench. Roxtec seals and protects the substation against water ingress. Flooded cable trenches were identified in a white paper [15] by EA Technology as a major cause of substation failure.

Roxtec supplied Western Power Distribution,[16] the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands, South Wales and the South West, supplying over 7.7 million customers. Roxtec supplied H3 trefoil seals to seal high voltage cables at the point they enter the 132 kV and 33 kV substations. The seals will protect against cable trench flooding.

Marine

Roxtec’s maritime work covers commercial, naval, passenger vessels and super yachts. Roxtec’s products are used for cable penetrations and to seal both metal and plastic pipes.

Ship Build and Ship Repair

Roxtec products are used for new build, ship conversion plus repair and upgrade projects. Roxtec is used to seal cables and pipes through decks and bulkheads. Roxtec products are tested and approved for use in A class and H class-rated sections according to IMO Resolution A.754 (18) and SOLAS.[17] They are also certified by various classification societies such as Lloyd’s, ABS, Bureau Veritas and DNV GL.[18]

Roxtec has worked on two Wind Turbine installation vessels, the TIV MPI Adventure and TIV MPI Discovery.

Royal Navy

Roxtec was used in a refit of the Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate HMS Lancaster sealing data and power cables. They have been used on other vessels in the fleet including Type 42 Destroyers HMS York[19] and HMS Edinburgh. The cables have to be sealed according to the latest Defence Standard 02-510 (Def Stan). The Roxtec sealing system is approved to military standards in many countries[20] and is NATO codified.

Sleev-It acquisition

In 2012 Roxtec acquired Kent based Sleev-It Fire Systems Ltd.[21] Sleev-it manufactures a range of fire penetration seals for plastic pipes in the cruise industry.

Construction

Roxtec is utilised in areas of specialised industrial construction. These include pharmaceutical facilities, hospitals, micro electric plants, food and beverage production areas, plus laboratories, clean rooms and contamination controlled environments. Its work in construction also covers commercial buildings, infrastructure - including bridges, tunnels, airports and metro systems, water treatment centres and high tech buildings.

Clean and Contained Rooms

Roxtec’s range of airtight cable and pipe seals are designed for use in the laboratory sector. Clean and contained rooms are highly sensitive sterile environments often found in hospitals, medical facilities and laboratories. Roxtec cable and pipe seals are approved for use in CL3 and CL4 contained rooms[22] and are capable of maintaining a gas tight seal in both negative and positive pressure environments.

Roxtec seals prevent the escape of harmful substances and biological agents from contained rooms. They stop foreign contaminants from leaking into sterile areas of hospitals and ultra sensitive research facilities. The seals are also fully resistant to common fumigation methods such as Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide or Formaldehyde. The seals are specially designed to reduce the number of cable and pipe entries and maintain airtight integrity. By having only one secure sealed point of entry to a clean room, the seals prevent multiple cuts creating several potential leak paths.

Royal Victoria Hospital

Roxtec seals were used in eight isolation rooms at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.[23] The isolation rooms in the hospital required negative pressure ventilation, allowing air to flow into the room but not escape out. The seal has a one-hour fire rating and is lightweight enough to be inserted into a plasterboard roof panel.

Cambridge Medical Research Council Laboratory

Roxtec has worked on the £200m medical research council molecular biology laboratory in Cambridge.[24] Their products were used to seal all cables, pipes and ducts entering the laboratories.

Telecom

Roxtec’s work in the Original Equipment Manufacturing sector covers cabinets, generators and turbines, robotics, rolling stock, trackside equipment and vehicles.

The OEM sector includes specialist offshore cranes. Roxtec has been supplying Granada Material Handling for its cranes on offshore wind farms. Roxtec seals will be installed on each foundation crane, providing a multi-cable water tight seal tested and rated to IP67. The cranes will be installed on the foundation piece of the wind turbines and used to load and unload materials and equipment.[26]

Roxtec has supplied its seals to power conversion specialists GE Converteam, which make Variable Speed Drives for new generation onshore wind farms across Europe. The Roxtec seals protect against water ingress and cable pull out in the base of the AC converter cabinets.[27]

Process Industry

ATEX Ex approved Roxtec seals

Roxtec seals can be used at any point where cables or pipes enter manufacturing process facilities. In manufacturing process facilities Roxtec seals are used for sealing around cables and pipes that enter into buildings, control cabinets, through bund walls, and replacing cable glands for cable entries into terminal and junction boxes.

Roxtec supplied blast proof cable and pipe seals for the Sadara Chemical Company’s petrochemical plant.[28] Their seals are being used in substations, motor control rooms, the utilities area, power rooms and the chlorine plant.

Trade Associations

Roxtec Limited is a member of several trade bodies in the UK. These include:

Awards

Roxtec's work on UK wind farms resulted in the company winning an Environmental Protection award at HazardEx 2011.[35] The award for environmental contribution to industry goes to a company which has used energy efficient processes or products within potentially explosive atmospheres and demonstrated experience in the renewable energy sector.

In 2009, Roxtec was included in the list of 'Super companies' produced by the Swedish business magazine Veckans Affärer ('Business Affairs' in English), and in the list of 'Gazelle companies' compiled by Dagens Industri.[36] The company won the Swedish Trade Council's Grand Export Prize 2010.[37]
