Rupinder Inderjit is a film and television writer. He is best known for his Punjabi film Ishq Brandy[1] which got recognition for its story and dialogues. Ishq Brandy easily manages one to transport to a world that's fantasy – like packing one gimmick after another and also, the dialogs (penned by Rupinder Inderjit who is also the screenplay writer) that have mass appeal, humor and impactful.[2] Rupinder Inderjit the writer of movie is otherwise a shy man, he would rather stand and watch the events unroll.But when it comes to writing the plot for Ishq Brandy, there is no holding back the scriptwriter.[3] The screenplay of his film Ishq Brandy is going to be included in the prestigious Oscar Library.
Early life
Rupinder Inderjit was born in Patiala and grew up in the village Dholan, Tehsil Jagraon, District Ludhiana, Punjab.[4] He completed his schooling from Guru Hargobind Public Senior Secondary School, Sidhwan Khurd. He was very young when he read Raj Kapoor's published personal diary. He was so inspired that he decided to be a storyteller through films. Prem Rog continues to be an inspiration. He would see Hindi film making on National Television and dream about being a film maker one day. Rupinder was madly obsessed with Punjabi literature especially with the works of the well known Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi. Rupinder started composing his own poems that he shared with his close friends in school and in turn encouraged this talent. Rupinder moved to Panjab University, Chandigarh for college where he completed his Bachelors in Anthropology with distinction and a university Gold Medal. He wanted to join Film and Television Institute Pune for a directing or writing course but was wait listed following the admissions interview. He return to Panjab University, Chandigarh to complete his Masters in Anthropology which again he accomplished with distinction and a university Gold Medal. Then he moved to Mumbai to follow his dream. His background in Anthropology landed him a job in market research where he worked for 3 years before moving on to developing a full-time writing career.
Writing career
His writing career started with dialogue for a Punjabi show for Balaji Telefilms that never were shot for broadcasting. He soon got an opportunity to work with Ram Gopal Varma who wanted new talent to write a film, worked with him for almost a year before the project was shelved. But Rupinder considered the experience great toward developing his writing skills to structure his story and flesh out his characters. Rupinder moved on Savdhaan India[5] for Life Ok, met veteran television director Anand Mahindroo and wrote a few episodes for "Dekh Bhai Dekh – 2". During this period he met Amit Prasher who was shooting his first film Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22. This is how he started writing Ishq Brandy. He is currently involved in writing dialogue for Time Machine, a TV series to be aired on the new channel Epic. Rupinder reads Punjabi literature in order to bring a change in Punjabi scripts.[6]
