History

RSSU was founded in 1991, after the Soviet Union dissolution, as the first Russian Educational and Scientific Center of Social Science. In the beginning the whole University included about 150 students on 2 faculties.

RSSU was the first University in Russia to offer undergraduate and graduate programmes in Social Work, Social Youth Work, Social Insurance, Social Gerontology and Social Support for the Disabled. Since starting these programmes, more than 400 000 social workers have graduated from the University and more than half of all people employed in Social Work and related professions in Russia have received their education and training at RSSU.

By 2000, RSSU started to broaden the range of research and educational activities, establishing departments focused on IT, Ecology, Occupational Safety, Modern Languages, and International Relations. At the same time, RSSU began to establish the network of campuses in Russia’s provinces, to teach Social Work, Social Insurance, Social Management and Rehabilitation at the level of undergraduate programmes and professional training courses.

Today the Russian State Social University is one of the biggest universities in Russia with over 80,000 students on 14 faculties. It operates more than 30 campuses located in the urban centres of the Russian Federation and two important CIS countries; Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. Research is currently being expanded into Social Entrepreneurship, Social Engineering, Theology, and Oriental Studies.

RSSU is the only Educational Center in Russia and former Soviet Union that provides such courses like Social Insurance and Family Law faculties.
