Ruth's Diner
Ruth’s Diner is located in Utah's historic Emigration Canyon, east of Salt Lake City. It was featured on the TV show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Season 5, episode 4).
History
It is the second oldest operating restaurant in Utah and was founded by "Ruth" in 1930. Ruth died in November 1989 at the age of 94.[1]
In 1930, Ruth started the diner as Ruth’s Hamburgers in downtown Salt Lake City in the Meredith Building at 120 East Second South.[2] Several years later her building was sold and demolished. Ruth then bought an old Salt Lake Trolley car and moved her restaurant to Emigration Canyon where she reopened in 1949. Ruth built an apartment onto the back of her trolley car (it’s now the lower dining area and kitchen) and lived on the property alone with her little Chihuahua dogs for almost 40 years.
Tracy and Erik Nelson are the current owners.
Food
Famous for its comfort food, the menu is a collection of "family favorites" and has been featured on several TV shows including the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives[3] and ABC 4's Good Morning Utah.[4]
