Beginning in 2013, Hawley was out of acting work for an 18 month stretch and had a variety of jobs including working as a chef at Wagamama in Heathrow Airport, stacking shelves in a clothes shop and fitting fireplaces as a labourer.[4]
Emmerdale
In 2014 he started his most prominent role, becoming the fourth actor to portray Robert Sugden on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. His main story-lines have included: returning to the village with the White family, an affair with Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller), the manslaughter of Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward) and cover-up, being shot by Ross Barton (Michael Parr) in a "who dunnit?" story-line and supporting Aaron when learned he was sexually abused by his father Gordon Livesy (Gary Mavers), as a child.
