Ryan McKay (born August 22, 1992) is an American ice hockey goaltender. He most recently played with the Miami RedHawks men's ice hockey team in the NCAA National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
McKay played junior hockey with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he was awarded for his outstanding play when he was named the 2012–13 USHL Goaltender of the Year (shared with Zane Gothberg).[1] He was further honored when USA Hockey selected him to receive the 2012–13 Dave Peterson Goalie of the Year award.[2]
As a freshman, McKay led all Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) goaltenders (second in the NCAA) in posting a 1.39 goals against average and a .946 save percentage during the 2012–13 season.[3] He was recognized for his outstanding play when he was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team.[4]
Following his start on a January 9, 2016 game (a 5–2 loss to the Minnesota–Duluth Bulldogs[5]), McKay became a consistent healthy scratch for the RedHawks. Nearly two months later, head coach Enrico Blasi revealed that McKay had been suspended from the team for the rest of the season but did not give a specific reason for the suspension. With the 2015–16 campaign being McKay's senior season and final year of eligibility, it meant the end of his collegiate career.[6]
