S. Azmat Hassan

Ambassador Syed Azmat Hassan (Ret.), M.A., M.Sc., is a former Ambassador of Pakistan and a former senior faculty associate of the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, specializing in Diplomacy and Middle Eastern studies. Currently, he is associated with the Lahore University of Management Sciences in its Humanities and Social Sciences Department. He was born on August 7, 1944 in Sialkot, Pakistan to Syed Fida and Zeenat Hassan.[1] His ranking at 'ratemyprofessors' stands at an average of 4.1/5.[2]

Hassan studied at St. Anthony's High School in Lahore.

His assignments have included ambassadorships in Malaysia, Syria (with responsibility for Lebanon) and Morocco. He has also served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in New Yorkk. At the Foreign Ministry Headquarters in Pakistan, Ambassador Hassan has served on the staff of the Prime Minister of Pakistan as Additional Secretary for foreign affairs and defense issues. At the Foreign Ministry, his other assignments have included heading the Middle East desk as Additional Secretary and the Afghanistan Division as Director General.[4]

1976-1978: First Secretary, Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, New York;

1978-1979: Counsellor, Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, New York;

1979-1980: Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, New York;

1980-1982: Deputy Chief of Mission Pakistan Embassy, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates;

1983-1985: Director General Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad;

1985-1988: Pakistan Ambassador to Malaysia Kuala Lumpur;

1989-19XX: Pakistan Ambassador to Syria Damascus, Syria.[1]

1992-1994: Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister of Pakistan[5]

During his posting in Malaysia as an Ambassador, he was quoted and interviewed several times in the local newspaper New Straits Times.[6][6][7][8][9][10][11] At the Conference of FAO, Twenty-sixth Session, Rome, 9–27 November 1991, S. Azmat Hassan represented Pakistan as Additional Secretary.[12] The Diplomatic Conference, which was convened by the International Atomic Energy Agency at its Headquarters from 14 to 17 June 1994, to adopt the Convention on Nuclear Safety, elected S. Azmat Hassan as Vice-President along with six other diplomats.[13]

Minor Role in 'Movement for the Restoration of Judiciary'

Ambassador Hassan along with Twenty-five former ambassadors in a letter to the government had demanded issuance of an executive order for immediate restoration of the deposed judges. The news report published in The Nation (2008) read as: "They have expressed their regret over the unwarranted delay in the restoration of the illegally deposed judges of the superior judiciary. The former envoys said that it was regrettable that even six weeks after the formation of the federal government, it has failed to fulfill the mandate given to it by the electorate and honour the commitment made in the Murree Declaration.They have rejected any linkage between the restoration of the judges and constitutional amendments to reform the judiciary."[14]

School of Diplomacy and International Relations

Hassan joined the School of Diplomacy and International Relations in fall 2000 following the end of his Pakistani civil service career as an Adjunct Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations. He taught DIPL 6500 The Modern Middle East: History, Challenges and Opportunities; DIPL 6501 The Modern Middle East: U.S. Involvement; DIPL 6520 Politics of Terrorism in the Middle East; DIPL 6505 Afghanistan: History, Challenges and Opportunities. He has represented the School of Diplomacy in numerous conferences. He was also a committee member to review the thesis.[15]

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

Ambassador Hassan became associated with the Lahore University of Management Sciences in 2006 where he is taught a number of courses as an Adjunct Faculty, and later as full-time Visiting Faculty. In fall 2015, he taught two courses- POL 412 Diplomacy: History and Practice and POL 224 Modern Middle East:History, Opportunities and Challenges. In spring 2016, he is teaching two courses- POL 232 Politics of International Terrorism and POL 231 US involvement in the Middle East.

S. Azmat Hassan has been associated with various organizations, think-tanks, etc. He is Senior Adviser, Board Of Sponsors, Center For War / Peace Studies.[16] He is also associated with the Global Peace Foundation[17] and serves on the boards of organizations including the New Jersey Division of the UNA-USA,[18] and the Center for UN Reform Education. The author of the book 'Jinnah, Pakistan and Islamic Identity: The Search for Saladin', Akbar S. Ahmed has mentioned S. Azmat Hassan for encouraging and assisting him in his 'work on Jinnah'.[19] James P. Muldoon, author of the book 'The architecture of global governance: an introduction to the study of international organizations', has also acknowledged Hassan for assistance and guidance in his book.[20]

He had been invited speaker at various fora in the United States, Germany,[50] Malaysia, and Pakistan. He is also a frequent commentator on international affairs for television and radio. Hassan also writes widely on foreign affairs for the press. His articles and perspectives have appeared in the Daily Record (New Jersey), the Star-Ledger (New Jersey) and Dawn (Pakistan), The Daily Journalist,[51] The Huffington Post.[3][4][5] His brief comments have appeared in various articles, magazines and news reports.[52][53][54][55][56]
