Stoddard Benham Colby (3 February 1816 – 21 September 1867)[1] was a native of Derby, VT. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1836 and practiced law in both Derby and Montpelier, VT. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States House of Representatives in 1856, where he ran as a Democrat.[2] Colby was appointed Register of the Treasury and assumed office on August 12, 1864.[3] In early August 1867, he received an honorary LL.D. from Norwich University in Northfield, VT.[4] Colby died in Haverhill, NH following a five-week illness.[5]
