The Sacramento Theatre Company is a non-profit Regional Professional Theatre in the Northern California city of Sacramento.

History

The Sacramento Theatre Company is the oldest theater troupe in Sacramento, The Sacramento Theatre Company was originally formed in 1942 to entertain locally stationed troops during World War II. STC was originally called the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre, until they opened the doors to their first theater home in 1949, The Eaglet Theatre. The Eaglet was built from canvas and wood to match its much older twin, the famed Eagle Theatre from the California Gold Rush period. The new theater benefited from the patronage of newspaper executive and heiress Eleanor McClatchy, an enthusiastic supporter of theater and the arts.

Mission Statement

The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement.

Today

Today, the Sacramento Theater Company calls the H Street Theatre Complex home. The new stages are located on H and 15th street in Midtown Sacramento, the cultural heart of the city. Staging plays in three performance spaces, STC as it is known, has been instrumental in the budding careers of such regional theater professionals as playwright Richard Hellesen and director Tim Ocel and international superstar Tom Hanks.

The School of the Arts

STC understands that young people dream of careers in performing arts, but need an outlet and proper training. STC meets those needs by offering elementary, middle, and high school students after-school and weekend training programs.

Veteran actors, directors, designers, technicians, and producers – all with professional training and college degrees – provide hands-on training. Students flourish and gain momentum as they work toward enrollment in colleges and, ultimately, careers in professional theatre. Many of STC’s alumni – including Yale University student Alexander Dominitz, Northwestern University student Anna Miles, University of Michigan student Paige Silvester, and Royal Academy of Music graduate Maggie Elizabeth May – are enrolled in theatre programs at top universities or working on Broadway or London’s West End.
