Salman F Rahman is Vice Chairman of Beximco Group, one of the largest corporate house of Bangladesh at the moment with over 48,000 employees working in its factories and head offices.[1] He is also considered as one of the wealthiest persons in Bangladesh having personal wealth of $5.5 billion(declared) approximately (There is no official data base for personal wealth in Bangladesh).[2]

Early life

In 1966 he along with his brother, Sohail, Rahman started business by running a jute mill, which was left behind by their father. The government nationalized the mill in 1971, which forced them to look for other opportunities. The brothers established Bangladesh Export and Import Company (Beximco Group) in 1972.[3] They started exporting seafood and crushed bones in Belgium, France, Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands.[4] At that time, foreign exchange control by the Bangladesh government was strict. They imported medicines with the foreign currency earned from exporting seafood and crushed bones.

In 1976, Rahman brothers established Beximco Pharma. Later on this company was listed as the first Bangladeshi company at the London's Alternative Investment Exchange.[5] Over the years Sohail F Rahman and Salman F Rahman expanded their business in other sectors and gradually became one of the largest corporate house of Bangladesh.[6]

Involvement in politics

Salman F Rahman participated in the student protest against President Ayub Khan in the late 1960s. After a long gap, in 1996, he formed a political party named 'Prosperous Bangladeshi Movement'. He contested in the 2001 general election but lost.

Involvement in the banking sector

In 1982, Salman F Rahman, along with his brother Sahail F Rahman, partnered with the Dubai-based Galadari Brothers Group and established the Arab Bangladesh Bank (AB Bank).[4] In 1985, he sold stake to the remaining partners. Soon after he and his brother bought a 30% stake in IFIC Bank. Rahman became chairman of the bank in 2010.[7]

Association

Salman F Rahman is currently serving as a director of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission[8] and Dhaka Stock Exchange.[9]

He was the founder of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute. He also served as president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bangladesh Aushad Shilpa Samity, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the SAARC Chambers of Commerce and industry.

He is chairman of Abahani Limited, Dhaka.[10]
