Sandesh Jhingan (born 21 July 1993) is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League. A versatile all-round defender, Jhingan is comfortable playing as a left or right full-back.

Club career

Early career

Born in Chandigarh, Jhingan began his youth career at the St. Stephen's Football Academy, and while with the academy, he helped his team reach the south-east Asian finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup.[2] He also helped his state team, Chandigarh win the B.C. Roy Trophy, the national under-19 state tournament in India.[2]

United Sikkim

In November 2011, Jhingan attended trials for I-League 2nd Division side United Sikkim,[3] eventually going on to sign for the Sikkim side a month later in December.[3] In his first season at United Sikkim, Jhingan played alongside former Indian captains Baichung Bhutia and Renedy Singh, appearing six times during the 2012 I-League 2nd Division final round[4] and helped his club gain promotion to the I-League, the top division of Indian football.[3]

Jhingan made his senior I-League debut on United Sikkim's opening match of the season against Salgaocar on 6 October 2012,[5] a playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his first professional goal in the 73rd minute, in a 3–2 win for his team.[5] He scored a second goal on 18 November 2012 in a 2–1 loss against Sporting Goa.[6]

Reports emerged in February 2012 that Jhingan had received trial offers from two Chinese League One teams and that he was to fly to China for the trials on 15 February.[7] However, selection for the India national team camp, starting 11 February, saw Jhingan remain with United Sikkim for the rest of the 2012–13 season.[7]

Mumbai FC

Following United Sikkim's relegation from the I-League at the end of the season, Jhingan signed on with IMG-Reliance for the Indian Super League, which was at the time scheduled to commence in January 2014,[8] rejecting an offer from Dempo.[8] On 12 November 2013, Jhingan joined I-League side Rangdajied United for the remainder of the season.[9] However, on 5 December, it was announced that Jhingan had instead signed on loan from IMG-Reliance for Mumbai of the I-League for the rest of the season.[10] He made his debut for Mumbai on 7 December 2013 against Pune, playing the full 90 minutes as Mumbai won the match 2–1.[11]

Kerala Blasters (2014)

On 22 July 2014, a day after his 21st birthday, Jhingan was selected by the Kerala Blasters in the second round of the Indian Super League draft.[12] Jhingan was a regular for the Blasters during the season, garnering much praise for his excellent performances, and resulting in interest from clubs in Europe and USA[13] as well as being named as the "Emerging Player" of the 2014 Indian Super League.[14] He made 14 appearances during the season, including the final against Atletico de Kolkata, where they lost 0-1 in injury time.[15]

Sporting Clube de Goa (loan)

On 2 February, Jhingan confirmed that he would be joining Sporting Goa for the 2014-15 I-League on loan from ISL side Kerala Blasters, rejecting loan offers from Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan. Jhingan chose the goan-based side in favor of attending the many trial offers he had from Europe - Spain, Denmark, Turkey and Switzerland, as the trials were too close to the 2 February 2015 European winter Transfer Window. He also confirmed through his agent that should any trials come up during the 2014-15 I-League season, he would attend them, but accepts that it is more likely that trials be more frothcoming in July, during pre-season in most of Europe.[16]

Jhingan made his debut for Sporting Goa against Mumbai at The Cooperage Ground's re-opening, helping his side to a goal-less draw.[17] He scored in the final round of the season against Pune from a Brandon Fernandes assist, from a corner, in a 4-0 win which confirmed his teams' status in the top division for the next season.[18]

Kerala Blasters (2015)

Jhingan signed an extension to his contract at Kerala Blasters for a further two years in May 2015, making him available for the 2015 ISL and binding him to a contract for the 2016 edition of the Indian Super League.[19] On 28 September 2015, Jhingan was named as the "Football Player Association of India"s (FPAI) Best Indian Player in the Indian Super League for the 2014 season.[20] Jhingan started and played the full 90 minutes in a round 4 game against Delhi Dynamos for his first game of the 2015 season in a 0-1 loss, having missed the first games through national team commitments.[21]

He won Hero of the Match award against Delhi Dynamos FC in 2015 Indian Super League. He won ISL Emerging Player of the Match award against NorthEast United FC in 2015 Indian Super League.

International

After winning the B.C. Roy Trophy, Jhingan was selected to join a India U19 camp, however injuries prevented him from making his debut.[3] He was then selected to join the India national team camp in 2013, before the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers, but once again an injury meant that he could not join up with the national team.[22]

Jhingan made his India U23 debut during the 2014 Asian Games, playing both of India's games as a centre back.[23][24]

He finally made his debut for the senior Indian team on 12 March 2015 against Nepal in a 2-0 win at Guwahati.[25][26] After the return leg against Nepal, he was selected to be part of the India U23 squad for 2016 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, and played in the match against Bangladesh U23 in a 0-0, after initially missing games against Uzbekistan U23s and Syria U23s.[27] He scored his first goal for the Senior National Team with a header against Turkmenistan in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Match.
