Sankaraguptam (Telugu: శంకరగుప్తం) is a village in Malikipuram mandal of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located in the delta region of Godavari known as Konaseema. The village has rich scenic beauty. Coconut, paddy, and casuarina are major crops grown.

Renowned Carnatic Vocalist Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna was born in this village.

Etymology

The name is said to be derived when Sankara hid here to protect himself from Bhasmasura who was blessed with boon by Lord Sankara that the head on which he places his palm would be burnt into ashes). Sankara refers to Lord Siva and guptam is a secret, the place where Lord Shiva hid to protect himself from Bhasmasura. It is said that despite a considerable amount of Smartha Brahmin population Sivalaya (Temple for Siva) is not present in the village.

Temples

Madanagopalaswamy temple, shrine of Krishna has an axe, instead of the flute that is normally seen.

Mutyalamma and mahalakshmi amma are the traditional village goddesses, a temple for them is located in santhapeta near panchayat office. pydimamba talli temple and sattema talli temple are located in rekapallivaripalem. subrahmanya Swamy temple standing on the bank of RAKTATULYA ( SANKARAGUPTAM MAJOR DRAIN) attracting tens of devotees every Tuesday. under the patronage of KOMARAGIRI & YARRAMILLI families of the village the temple is being well maintained.

Major festivals

Major festivals celebrated are Pongal (in January) Vinayaka Chavithi (Aug-Sept) Owing to a large number of believers in the village Christmas (December 25) is also celebrated grand. Sri Rama Navami celebrations in a grand manner in many parts of the village.
