After coming in with top marks at her training camp Sarah (Sophie Desmarais) is encouraged to go to McGill University to train. When she brings up the idea to her parents they shoot her down telling her they don't have the money. Sarah talks with her co-worker Antoine (Jean-Sébastien Courchesne) about wanting to go to Montreal. He decides to move with her in order to help her financially. On their way to Montreal Antoine suggests that they marry in order to obtain financing available to young couple in university. Sarah shrugs him off.

Once at school Sarah quickly becomes overwhelmed with the financial responsibilities of being enrolled in the running program. She meets a fellow runner named Isabelle and befriends her. She decides to marry Antoine for the money.

At a student party Sarah watches Isabelle and begins to feel her heart speed up. She is taken to the hospital by Antoine where she learns that she has a heart condition that could prevent her from running. Back at home she kisses Antoine and the two have sex. The following day Sarah brushes him off telling him that sleeping with him was a one time thing. Antoine plays off his feelings however later he gets drunk and confesses that he loves Sarah despite himself. Antoine decides that he cannot continue living with Sarah and asks for a divorce. At the same time he tells her he will continue paying for their apartment for a few months until she can land on her feet.

Before a track session Sarah stands in the bathroom looking at the heart monitoring equipment she is supposed to wear in order to measure whether he heart is reaching dangerous levels when she is running. She decides not to wear it and to continue running anyway.
