Schuler Books & Music, formerly known as simply Schuler Books, is a small Michigan chain of bookstores. Along with books, DVDs, and music CDs, the stores also sell food and beverages at its in store cafes.

History

The first store was founded in 1982, by Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld in Grand Rapids, Michigan, due to their love of books. The original store was located at 2975 28th Street SE, and predominately sold new books and newspapers. It did not have a cafe though served espresso drinks via a kiosk cart. A much larger store opened in 1995 a few blocks west of the original location. The current flagship store at 2660 28th Street SE introduced The Chapbook Cafe and expanded offerings with music among other items.

Schuler Books provides access to print on demand books via the Espresso Book Machine.[1]

Locations

Schuler has three locations: Meridian Mall in Okemos, Eastwood Towne Center in Lansing, and the flagship, on 28th Street Southeast in Grand Rapids.

Two additional locations have been closed. One was opened in downtown Grand Rapids in 2007 and closed in 2013,[2] and a second on Alpine Avenue in Walker opened in 2003 and closed in 2014.[3]

In the summer of 2014, the store bought an independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan, called Nicola's Books located on Jackson Avenue on the west side of the town. Although it is now owned by Schuler's, it has kept its original name.[4]
