Scott James Cuthbert (born 15 June 1987) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a defender for League Two club Luton Town.

Cuthbert started his career with Scottish Premier League club Celtic, signing a professional contract in 2003 at the age of 16. He never played for the first team however, and spent time away on loan at Scottish First Division club Livingston during the 2006–07 season and St Mirren in the SPL during the 2008–09 season. Cuthbert joined English League One side Swindon Town in 2009 for a fee of £100,000, but left the club two seasons later to join Leyton Orient after his contract expired. After four seasons with Leyton Orient, Cuthbert signed for Luton Town in 2015.

Cuthbert has represented Scotland at under-19, under-20, under-21 and B level.

Club career

Celtic

Cuthbert was part of the Celtic youth set-up from the age of 11, signing his first professional contract in August 2003 at the age of 16.^[3] He went on to captain the club's under-19's and reserve teams.^[4] In the 2007–08 season, Cuthbert was on the substitute bench, unused, in an Old Firm derby as Celtic lost 3–0.^[5]

Livingston (loan)

Cuthbert had a one-month loan spell at Scottish First Division club Livingston during the 2006–07 season, making four appearances.^[4] He scored his first professional goal in a 3–1 loss against Airdrie United.^[6]

St Mirren (loan)

Cuthbert joined Scottish Premier League club St Mirren in August 2008 on a season-long loan^[7] He made his debut against Kilmarnock at Love Street on 16 August 2008.^[8] He made a total of 34 appearances in all competitions before returning to Celtic.^[4] Since he left St Mirren, Cuthbert has expressed his desire to join the club again in a second loan spell^[9]

Swindon Town

On 13 July 2009, it was announced that he had signed for English League One club Swindon Town,^[4] despite interest from his former club St Mirren. Cuthbert made his debut for Swindon on the opening day of the season against Gillingham, but was left out for four games until Swindon faced Wolves in the League Cup, and thereafter held down a regular place in the starting squad. Cuthbert scored his first goal for Swindon on 29 August 2009 in a 2–1 win against Southend United.^[10] Towards the end of the season Swindon were well-placed for promotion to the Championship, but with no wins in their last six games the club finished in fifth place, resulting in a place in the play-off final. However, Millwall would beat Swindon 1–0, preventing the club from heading to the Championship. In May 2010, Cuthbert said his move to Swindon was the best career move he ever had and also that playing at Wembley Stadium was a dream come true^[11] Though Swindon lost, Cuthbert believed the club might be promoted the next season^[12]

The following season saw a marked contrast to the one before with Swindon relegated to League Two. At the start of the season Cuthbert was named as the club's vice-captain.^[13] Cuthbert scored his first goal of the season in a 2–1 loss against MK Dons on 28 August 2010.^[14] Six months later on 12 February 2011, Cuthbert scored his second goal of the season in a 2–1 loss against Colchester United. In March 2011 he suffered a fractured cheekbone in a 1–1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge, but was told he didn't need surgery^[15] and would play until the end of the season. After Swindon's relegation was confirmed following a 3–1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, Cuthbert took the blame mistakes he made, but believed the club would bounce back.^[16] With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2011, Cuthbert said he wanted to stay at the club, but was not offered a new deal.^[17]

Leyton Orient

On 3 June 2011, Cuthbert signed a two-year contract with League One Leyton Orient.^[18] In the opening game of the season Cuthbert made his debut, playing as a centre back in a 1–0 loss against Walsall.^[19] On 13 September 2011, Cuthbert received a red card in a 3–1 loss against Bournemouth and was suspended for three games.^[20] Cuthbert scored his first Orient goal on 8 October 2011, helping the O's to a 3–2 win at Scunthorpe.^[21] At the end of October, Cuthbert was nominated for Player of the Month,^[22] but lost to Jordan Rhodes. On 31 March 2012, in a 2–0 defeat against Charlton Athletic, Cuthbert suffered a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the final seven games of the season.^[23][24] Despite his injury, Cuthbert was named Leyton Orient's Player of the Year for the 2011–12 season.^[25] Shortly after receiving it, Cuthbert said that winning the award was his proudest moment.^[26]

Ahead of the 2012–13 season, Cuthbert made a recovery from his injury ahead of a friendly match with Ebbsfleet United.^[27] After just two appearances Cuthbert again suffered a hamstring injury that kept him from playing until December 2012.^[28] In the semi-final of the southern section against Yeovil Town, Cuthbert provided a winning assist for Dave Mooney in a 1–0 win to send the club through the final of the southern section. In a 0–0 draw against Preston North End on 23 March 2013, Cuthbert suffered a fractured metatarsal that caused him to miss the rest of the campaign.^[29] Shortly after the end of the season, Cuthbert signed a new two-year contract with the club.^[30]

Cuthbert played most of the 2013–14 season at right-back in a campaign where Leyton Orient came close to promotion into the Championship, ultimately losing on penalties in the play-off final against Rotherham United.^[31] Cuthbert played in 54 games in all competitions over the season, scoring four goals.

Mirroring his time at Swindon, the 2014–15 season saw a complete turnaround in Cuthbert's fortunes as Leyton Orient went from play-off finalists one year to fighting a relegation battle the next. The club was relegated on the last day of the season after only securing a 2–2 draw, coincidentally against Cuthbert's former club Swindon Town, and Cuthbert was not offered a new contract.^[32]

Luton Town

On 26 May 2015, Cuthbert signed a two-year contract at League Two club Luton Town.^[33] Upon his arrival, Cuthbert stated "the aim is promotion - I wouldn't have come to this club if I didn't think that was possible."^[33]

International career

Cuthbert was captain of the Scotland under-19 team that reached the final of the UEFA under-19 Championships in 2006 and the Scotland under-20 team that played at 2007 Under-20 World Cup in Canada. He represented the Scotland B side in May 2009.^[34]
