Scotty ATL, also known as Scotty, is an Atlanta-based rapper, songwriter and record producer.

Early life

Scotty ATL attributes his interest in hip-hop to both of his parents, noting that his mother in particular would often play 2Pac around the house.[1] It was as Scotty grew older, though, that he first took a serious interest in music, along with a friend, King J, who was older than Scotty and a rapper.[1] When Scotty was in seventh grade King J enlisted in the Navy, and Scotty first started to make his own rap music; Scotty used the equipment to create a recording studio in his family’s basement, and started to record CD’s to sell at school.[1][2]

Upon graduating from Redan High School in Atlanta, Scotty attended Savannah State University to play basketball, ultimately deciding to leave the team due to the team’s losing record.[1] With his new-found free time, Scotty rededicated himself to music, and, as part of the group Monopoly Fleet that Scotty had formed in high school, he released an album titled 2339 Underground Boyz.[1] Scotty and Monopoly Fleet signed a record deal following the release of 2339 Underground Boyz, and, while still in college, began traveling frequently back and forth from Atlanta to Savannah to focus on recording a new album, though the deal ultimately fell through.[1] With the failed deal behind him, Scotty moved back to Atlanta and “got involved in the whole little street life,” focusing less on music.[1]

Professional career

In 2011, With the street life behind him and a renewed focus on music, Scotty, in collaboration with DJ/producer DJ Burn One released Summer Dreams, hailed by Stereogum writer Tom Breihan as “one of [the] year’s great unheralded mixtapes.”[3] The mixtape was helmed by standout single “Husslin,” of which Scotty has said in a recent interview with XXL Magazine, “It’s the song that everybody at the shows knows, raps the words to and gets crazy on. I think it’s because the song is relatable, it's not a song bragging about what I got; but it's about husslin to get what you want.”[2]

In the spring of 2012, following the release of Summer Dreams, Scotty released In The Meantime. The 10-track mixtape, hosted by DJ SR, was offered as a collection of songs for fans to listen to as Scotty continued to work on his next official project. In Summer 2012, Scotty released his new mixtape, The Jiffy Cornbread Experience, hosted by DJ Scream and premiered by popular indie music website Stereogum, which hailed the project as being “rich in small details and bass tones.”[3] Much of the production on The Jiffy Cornbread Experience was created by Soundtrakk, known for producing a number of singles for Lupe Fiasco, including his breakout hit “Kick, Push.”[3]

In December 2012, Scotty announced a new mixtape with DJ Burn One, FAITH, which is an acronym for “Forever Atlanta In The Heart,” and which has been billed as a follow-up to the pair’s 2011 tape, Summer Dreams.[4] The mixtape will be released in February 2013, and has been preceded by lead single (and video) “S.S.D.D.,” an acronym for “Same Shit Different Day,” and “All The Hoes,” which features fellow Atlanta rapper, and Two-9 group member, Curti$ William$.[5]

Touring

In January 2013, Scotty ATL embarked on his first headline tour, the Cool Club Tour, with opening act League of Extraordinary Gz. Also appearing on select dates of the tour were artists including Starlito, SL Jones, DJ Burn One, Big Sant, and other local acts. The tour made stops in Atlanta, Birmingham, Dallas, Austin, Houston, Oklahoma City, and more.
