Scrawl is a 2015 British horror film directed by Peter Hearn and produced by Annabelle Le Gresley and Peter Hearn. It stars Mark Forester Evans, Daisy Ridley, Nathalie Pownall and Elizabeth Boag. In October 2015, Scrawl played a longer cut at the Fright Night Film Festival in Louisville, Kentucky.[1] Subsequent film festivals in 2015 have shown a shorter cut, with more festivals lined up for 2016.[2]

Plot

A boy (Liam Hughes) writes a comic book with his best friend (Joe Daly), and finds situations depicted in the comic book coming to life. After the appearance of a mysterious girl (Daisy Ridley), the boy is forced to face the reality of what he has written, and with the help of a girl from his past (Annabelle Le Gresley), his best friend's dad (Mark Forester Evans) and his best friend's sister (Ellie Selwood), the boy begins a battle to attempt to rewrite death...

Cast

Production

Scrawl's stylistic production harks back to the 70s and 80s horrors Phantasm and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, as well as fantasy films such as Big.[3] Hearn had been teaching film at Andover College, and conceived the project as a hands-on training exercise for his students, influenced by Brian De Palma's Home Movies. Much like that film, Hearn's students were given the responsibility of raising money (via crowdfunding), as well as shooting and editing the film, all under Hearn's supervision. The cast consisted of professional actors, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens's Daisy Ridley, then unknown, as well as award winning theatre and film actress Elizabeth Boag,[4] Mark Forester Evans and Nathalie Pownall from the horror film Credo. Both Boag and Pownall had worked before with Hearn on his short film 'Motto' as well as a previous feature film. Many of the students involved have subsequently gone into the industry or onto film school.[5]

Reception

Dr Lenera of Horror Cult Films rated the film 8/10 stars and said it is "a very impressive piece of work considering the circumstances of its making, and is certainly very different to much else that is out there at the moment."[6]

Scrawl Director / Producer - Peter Hearn was recently awarded the Phil Tucker Spirit Award by the Zed Fest Film Festival, Burbank, CA. The Phil Tucker Spirit Award is Zed Fest’s special honor. It is bestowed upon a filmmaker who displays determination, perseverance, and innovation. Named after the Director/Producer of the 1953 classic Z-Movie ROBOT MONSTER, Philip J. Tucker. The award was given to 'Scrawl' seeking to acknowledge and support filmmakers like Phil Tucker who strive to bring their movies to life against all odds and obstacles."[7]
