Semillitas is a United States Pay TV channel owned by the media company SomosTV, headed by Luis Villanueva. The channel is aimed at the Hispanic toddlers and 3-14 children with the objective of preserving Hispanic cultural roots and language through entertaining and violence free programming, specifically animation. Semillitas offers culturally relevant programming in neutral Spanish 24-hours a day.[1][2]
History
In 2010, Semillitas was launched by Somos TV. Semillitas is oriented to Hispanic toddlers and pre-teens and preschool aged children with the objective to help preserve the language and cultural heritage.[3] Semillitas offers violence free, comedy and stop-motion rich branded animation content from Latin America and international markets. Hispanic children from 0 to 14 years of age make up a substantial segment of this age group in the United States.[4] According to the 2000 United States Census, of the population group aged 0 to 14 years in the United States, 27% are Hispanic reaching above 50% in some states such as California, New Mexico, and main cities in Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado. Hispanic children in the United States move between two cultures, at home, parents preserve their heritage and language; while in school, they assimilate into American culture and language.[5] Semillitas through programming, supports parents in teaching their children their first footsteps in academic subjects, such as letters, colors, numbers, etc. as well as, preserving traditional elements such as tales and songs, produced in-house.[2] On October 24, 2011, Verizon FiOS added the channel on the lineup on 1723.
