Shadow of the Beast is a platform video game under development by Heavy Spectrum Entertainment Labs, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and stated for release on PlayStation 4 in May 2016. It is a remake of the 1989 game of the same name, made famous on the Commodore Amiga.

Gameplay

The game follows the story of the original predecessor. Once again, players control Aarbron, who was kidnapped as a child and corrupted through magic into a monstrous warrior-servant. There are no details yet about the lord Maletoth or the fact that the creature's memory of his human life returned when he watched a man being executed, facts that occurred in the first game.

Gameplay will combine platform and action elements, with the introduction of combos. Aarbron will have to beat his enemies by counter-attacking to strike them down and shield-wield foes that must be ducked behind in order to defeat them.[3] During E3 2015 a gameplay video was introduced, in which Matt Birch, CEO of Heavy Spectrum Entertainment, showed a combat system which he mentioned as "brutal", while introducing the traditional health bar, combos through quick-time events and traps (even the original jet engines) inside dungeons. Graphics in this version appear to keep the parallax scrolling from the original title, now in 3D.[4]

Development

Shadow of the Beast was initially announced during Gamescom 2013 as a PS4 exclusive.[5] The first trailer was revealed, among with the announcement of Heavy Spectrum Entertainment Labs as developer. On April 2014, developer CEO, Matt Birch said "The music, the art, they were really important to us, and we wanted to make sure we don't disappoint people."

Sony officially announced the first gameplay video during Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015. The release date was originally set as March 2nd 2016, but was delayed to 17 May 2016. The original Shadow of the Beast is also included in the remake as an unlockable extra. An "infinite lives" mode was added to make the original game more easy to play.[6]
