Shahabad is a town in Gulbarga district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town is divided into the following areas: Bazaar, the residential townships of Alstom and Jaypee Cements (formerly ACC or HMP), Bhankur/Shantnagar and Old Shahabad. Agriculture, limestone mines, boiler and cement production are the main areas of commerce. The river Kagina passes through Shahabad and is a major source of water for the town.in and around this area ththere are so many illegal mines where under progress still government not provided a good education toon to people and good facility school and where school are with insufficient staff class room and desk and bench even mm primary Helth Center also so poor on condition the road which connect shortly with main city of gulbarghi is not yet completed past fives years theg riven was on dried hdue to illegal sand and stone mining inside the river

Geography

Shahabad is located at 17°08′N 76°56′E / 17.13°N 76.93°E / 17.13; 76.93.[2] It has an average elevation of 391 metres (1282 feet). City area is 7.80 km2, length of roads 32.50 km.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[3] Shahabad had a population of 50,587. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shahabad has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 48%. In Shahabad, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

In the Government of Nizam of Hyderabad, Shahabad was a subdivisional administrative office with nearly 300 villages governed by. Here was a well structured Jail in an area of about 7 acres, but now that had demolished and now there is sub-treasury office built by government authority.

Education

Anjuman Urdu primary and high school is one of the most popular and famous school of SHAHABAD. nowadays another Urdu school has been built by the Government.

Mount Carmel Convent School(estd-1963),is one of the most well known, reputed and prestigious schools. Consisting of a large three-storied building with a large play ground lined with trees,it continues to function in what is now known as Alstom Colony. This is one of the best environment friendly colony,with full of greenery and free from pollution.

Seth Goverdhan Lal Varma Hindi Vidhyalaya is known has Hindi high school by local people.It is a Hindi medium school,It is centrally located near the railway station and easily accessible.

Bal Vidya Mandir is also a well-known English medium school, administered by the Central Railway Society. It is centrally located near the railway station and easily accessible.

H.K.E Society's S.S. Margol college of arts, science and commerce is one of the oldest and well known degree college, which founded in 1967 situated outskirts of city in nearly 10 acre of land with well established library and staff and with well structured building.

Commerce

Shahabad is well known for its stones—called Shahabad stones. Almost all railway stations used to be tiled with the stones. Now due to modernization, most of the major railway stations are switching to other materials. Still Shahabad stones are among the most economical stones for tiling.

Alstom Projects India Ltd & Jaypee Cements (formerly owned by ACC and then by HMP Cements) are the two major factories located in the town providing employment to a majority of the population, either direct or indirect.

Shahabad is also a major toor dal growing region in Gulbarga. Apart from toor dal, the major crops cultivated are jowar, ragi, sunflower and sugarcane.
