Shake the Missile Base is a punk, experimental noise rock album and the 13th album released by New York punk/experimental bassist/flutist Steve Lieberman (The Gangsta Rabbi)age 49 at the time of release, 27 November 2007, six weeks before Lieberman was committed to a local psych ward for cutting and other complications of major depressive and bipolar disorders. His failing mental health is evidenced repetitively on the album, especially in the songs "Public Suicide", "The Flagellator" and "Ld50'.[1]

During a tour for Shake the Missile Base in the spring of 2008, Lieberman cut himself on stage during the performance of "Public Suicide" in at New York's Crazy Donkey club.[2]

"Public Suicide" and "Sex Whore" reached the top ten on SoundClick's rock chart in 2008.[3]

Critical reception

Smother Magazine

'Replacing sunshine-laden lyrics with angry words of rage, heartache, depression and suicide, a heavily distorted album by one of my favorite independent avant-garde artists. I'm not sure whether I'll ever get everything Mr. Lieberman is trying to espouce, but damn if I want to. That's why I listen intently to every damn word, note and flute-craziness on "Shake The Missile Base" [4]

Razorcake Magazine

'Some may see little talent here with much ballyhooing, while others will find a unique genius quality in the unpolished delivery of songs as "Skinheads In My Yard", "Rubbin' One Out For My Baby" and "Love @ Defcon 5". It's hard not to find easy comparisons to Wild Man Fisher and Wesley Willis'".[5]

Indie Music Stop

'With over 22 songs lasting over an hour and distorted bass parts that would even make the most hardcore punk bands cringe, depending on who you ask, Steve Lieberman is either a musical madman or a genius with a vision. With flute parts with a Jethro Tull flutter, I give the Gangsta Rabbi credit for not being afraid to do what he wants with music and letting the chips fall where they may. Rating 6.5 stars out of 10.[6]

WQMC-FM Radio

This guy's insanity is genius! If only Wesley Willis were alive, a Willis-Lieberman tour would have been magnificent.[7]
