Shamit Shome (born September 5, 1997) is a Canadian professional soccer midfielder who plays for FC Edmonton.
Playing career
Youth
Shome played youth soccer in his hometown with Edmonton Southwest United SC until 2014.[1]
Edmonton
Shome joined FC Edmonton's academy program in 2015. In the fall of that year he enrolled at the University of Alberta and had a standout year with the Alberta Golden Bears, scoring six goals in twelve appearances and earning the CWUAA Rookie of the Year Award.[2]
On February 12, 2016 Shome signed his first professional contract with FC Edmonton.[2] He made his debut for the club on April 16 of that year, playing 80 minutes in a 1–0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.[3]
International career
Shome was born in Canada to Bangladeshi parents – his father hails from Sylhet, while his mother is originally from Dhaka.[1] As a result, he is eligible for these two countries. He received his first call-up to a Canadian U18 national team camp in October 2014 while he was still playing with Edmonton Southwest United. He received three further call-ups to Canadian U18 camps in 2015 and was the only university player called up to a camp in November 2015 in Mexico.[1]
Shome received his first Canadian U20 national team call-up in February 2016 and started in a 2–1 upset against England in an unofficial youth friendly.[1][3] Shome is still eligible to represent Bangladesh at senior level.
