Shannon Arrum Williams Lees (Hangul: 샤넌 아름 윌리엄스; born 26 May 1998), best known as Shannon, is a British Korean singer and actress based in South Korea. Prior to her debut, Shannon appeared in SBS's Star King, before moving to South Korea in 2010 to pursue a music career.[1] Being raised and born in the United Kingdom, Shannon is fluent in English and Korean. She is currently signed under DAP Sound, a division of MBK Entertainment.

Biography

Born on May 26, 1998 in the United Kingdom to a Welsh father, Chris Williams Lees, and a Korean mother, Jungmi Kim, Shannon (Korean name: Arrum (Hangul: 아름; RR: Areum) is the youngest in their family with two older twin half-brothers, Christian Lees and Jonah Lees, from her father's previous relationship. She attended Sylvia Young Theatre School and at the age of 7, she was given the role of Cosette in the musical Les Miserables.[2] Shannon is currently studying at Dwight School Seoul.

Career

Pre-debut

Shannon first appeared on South Korean media through SBS's Star King in 2010, where she expressed her singing excellence which received attention in 2011. She then moved to South Korea to pursue a career in music and signed an exclusive contract with Core Contents Media (now known as MBK Entertainment) in 2011 to train for five years.[3]

In 2012, prior to her official debut, Shannon released her first single, Day and Night featuring Areum (former member of T-ara) and Gun-ji (Gavy NJ) and was featured in singer Yangpa's song, "Together". She was recruited as a new member of F-ve Dolls in 2013, but withdrew from the group before their debut in July as she wanted to be a solo singer.[2] After her withdrawal, her agency, Core Contents Media announced that it would take her another one to two years of training before Shannon can debut as a soloist.[4] On 23 November 2013, Shannon appeared an episode of JTBC's Hidden Singer 2 as one of the impersonators of singer IU.[5]

2014: Hidden Singer 2, Remember You and debut with Daybreak Rain

On January 18, Shannon appeared on on JTBC's Hidden Singer 2 for the King of Kings finale round and performed IU's "Good Day" and Beyonce's "Listen", but was eliminated before the final round.[6] On January 29, she released a new digital single, "Remember You", to commemorate the end of her three year training for her debut. The track was composed by Cho Young-su and features Speed's Jongkook [7]

On 12 February, Shannon made a appearance on labelmate, Speed's showcase called Speed Day, which was broadcast on SBS MTV. She performed "Let It Go", a song from the film Frozen, and Rihanna's "Diamonds" with Dani.[8]

Shannon officially debuted as a singer and released her debut single, "Daybreak Rain" on December 1, which charted at number 32 on Gaon digital chart after its release.[9] On 26 December 2014, she released a collaboration single, "Breath", with Vasco and Giriboy.

2015-present: Eighteen, Moorim School drama

On 5 March 2015, Shannon announced the impending release of her first mini album Eighteen and single "Why Why".

On 17 September 2015, it was announced that she will be appearing in the upcoming drama Moorim School, as Shannon, which start airing on 11 January 2016.[10] This was her first drama acting job in Korea.
