Life and career
At the age of 16, Rooney left school to pursue her career in acting. She enrolled on a performing arts course at Hull University.[4] She performed as a stand-up comedian,[5] and toured with a play in various schools across Britain.[6]
Rooney was cast for her first television role, that of Rae Earl in My Mad Fat Diary, a drama about a young woman who is released from a psychiatric facility.[7] The show was a success for E4 and Rooney received a BAFTA nomination at the British Academy Scotland Awards.[8][9] The Guardian's Sam Wollaston wrote "Sharon Rooney's performance in the lead is natural, effortless and utterly believable."[10] The role also saw her nominated for a Royal Television Society award in 2014.[11]
