Shashaaa Tirupati (often misspelled as Tripathi, born December 21, 1987) is a multilingual playback singer, songwriter and voice over artist of Indo-Canadian origin, with family roots in Kashmir, predominantly active in the Bollywood and South Indian music industries. She was noticed by Academy Award Winner AR Rahman during Coke Studio Season 3 and went on to be a part of his Hindustani Choir for the show. She sang her first solo "Vaada Vaada" for Rahman from the Rajnikanth, Deepika Padukone starrer, 'Kochadaiiyaan'. It is, however, with her second song, "Aye Mr. Minor" from Rahman's musical, 'Kaaviyathalaivan', that she gained sudden popularity in the Tamil music industry.[1] She was nominated for the Big Music Awards and the IIFA 2015 and won the Mirchi Music Award as Best Upcoming Female Singer for the song "Aye Mr. Minor". Her recent song, "Silikku Marame" composed by music director D. Imman, was a massive hit. Besides Hindi and Tamizh, she has lent her voice to popular Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Arabic and English numbers.

Shashaa sang for three tracks in the 2015 Mani Ratnam - AR Rahman film OK Kanmani,[2] namely Kaara Attaakaara, Parandhu Sella Vaa, and Naane Varugiraen (and three in the Telugu version OK Bangaram: Raara Aatagaada, Maayedho Cheyyava, and Yedho Adaganaa) starring Nithya Menen and Dulquer Salmaan. She went on to win the Best Female Singer Award for "Naane Varugiren" at the Vikatan Awards 2015. She performed in the AR Rahman: Greatest Hits Concert at the O2 Arena, London, August 15, 2015 and the NH7 Weekender Music Festival by Bacardi as part of Rahman's entourage.

Shashaa has been featured in MTV Unplugged Season 4[3] alongside Hindi music director Mithoon and playback singer Mohammad Irfan.

She performed with AR Rahman as part of his recent TEDx Talks 2016 segment held in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Early life and education

Tirupati began singing on local radio channels in Vancouver at the age of six, gave her first stage performance at eight, and began studying Hindustani Classical music at ten. She received most of her initial musical training from the Late Mrs. Kamala Bose in Allahabad. She further trained under 'Padmashri' and 'Padmabhushan' Girija Devi of the Benaras Gharana.

She attended LA Matheson Secondary School in Surrey, BC, Canada. She graduated in 2005, earning a Gordon M. Shrum Major Entrance Scholarship for Undergraduate Studies at Simon Fraser University, the Matheson Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, The Surrey Administrator's Scholarship, The UBC President's Entrance Scholarship, and the Governor General's Medallion for the topmost achiever of the graduation class of 2005 in the province.[4] She is an MBA in marketing and is pursuing her second Masters from the Symbiosis College, Pune.

Career

While undertaking her undergraduate studies, Tirupati continued to perform at festivals and solo concerts, and later left school to pursue a career in Bollywood playback singing in Mumbai, India.

Tirupati has sung the solo song "Vaada Vaada" (Female) for Academy Award Winner, AR Rahman in the 2014 3D Animated Film Kochadaiiyaan.[5] She was also part of Coke Studio Season 3 with AR Rahman, as part of his Hindustani Choir, prior to which she had sung for various films including Bumm Bumm Bole,[6] Turning 30,[7] Jo Hum Chahein[8] and Yeh Stupid Pyar. She has performed for AR Rahman in his international tours "Infinite Love" and "Rahmanishq".[9] Shashaa has sung AR Rahman's tune "Aye Mr. Minor" for the Tamil historical film Kaaviya Thalaivan starring South Stars Siddharth and Vedhika. She is also a voice in the backing vocals of "Laadli", title track in AR Rahman's album RAUNAQ, alongside Rahman himself and Lata Mangeshkar.

She has been a part of AR Rahman's "Infinite Love", "Rahmanishq", "T-20 Opening Concert" Dhaka, "AR Rahman: Greatest Hits Concert" at the O2 Arena London, "Vadodara Fest 2015" and the NH7 Weekender Music Festival Delhi, Bangalore and Pune 2015 amidst others.
