Shaun Rawcliffe (born 1961) is a former professional bodyguard, a British martial artist and ICT security consultant.

Career

Shaun Rawcliffe went from studying architecture to working with ex-SAS officer and survival expert Eddie McGee. He taught CQB to the armed forces, trained alongside the Gurkha regiment and had a stint in the Falklands during the ‘conflict’ before working in close protection in North Africa and then Saudi Arabia for a notable Saudi family. He worked in the close protection industry for over nineteen years, working in Europe, Hong Kong and the UK. Though most of his clients were private businessmen, he also worked for Chan Kong-Sang Jackie Chan, Hong Jin Bao Sammo Hung and Cynthia Rothrock to name a few in the world of Martial arts.

He is a senior western student of Ip Chun (葉準 or Yip Jun) and is one of only 26 people in the world who have Master Ip Chun's personal certification and permission to teach for and represent him worldwide. Rawcliffe was instrumental in planning and starting the Ip Chun Wing Chun Kuen Martial Arts Association in Hong Kong with Ip Chun in 1992 and the European Ip Chun Wing Chun Association in 2005.

Rawcliffe runs the Midlands Wing Chun Kuen organisation (Midlands Wing Chun Kuen (UK)) with schools around the United Kingdom and northern Italy. In 1999 at the 1st World Ving Tsun Conference in Hong Kong, he gave one of the most memorable, practical and entertaining demonstrations of Wing Chun street self-defence to the background music of "the good, the bad and the ugly" - COMBAT Martial Arts magazine, Jan 2000.

He is a Certified Instructor with the Ip Chun Wing Chun Martial Arts Association - Certified in Ip Man Wing Chun under the tutelage of Grand Master Ip Chun. A permanent member and certified instructor with the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Hong Kong, a permanent member Yip Man Martial Arts Athletic Association Ltd and the Ip Chun Wing Chun Academy in Hong Kong. In the UK he is a registered certified coach, with the National Coaching Foundation (Sports Coach UK) and with the BCCMA in the UK. He is also a Permanent Honorary Committee Member of the Ip Man Tong in Foshan, China

In addition to Wing Chun, which is Shaun's passion, he now works as an ICT Security Manager having migrated from physical personal close protection into the world of cyber space and crime.

Publications

Shaun Rawcliffe is the author of a trilogy of Wing Chun books. The first book Simply ...Wing Chun Kung Fu, has also been translated and published in French by a Parisian publisher. The second book: Wing Chun Kung Fu, The Wooden Dummy was published in June 2008 The third book Wing Chun Kung Fu, The Weapons Training covering the training of the Wing Chun weapons was published in September 2012. All 3 are now available digitally on the Kindle through Amazon.

As well as publishing his own books, he has been featured in articles in many Martial Arts magazines over the last thirty years including: COMBAT, FIGHTERS, KARATE and ORIENTAL ARTS, SAMURI (Italy) and QI MAGAZINE. He has been included in many publications including "Wing Chun 50th Anniversary" by VTAA, "Ip Chun 80th birthday publication" by Ip Chun Academy, "Wing Chun Skill and Philosophy" by Master Ip Chun, "Grandmaster Yip Man Centenary Book" by The Ving Tsun Athletic Association and "Chinese WuShu Association Centenary book" by The Chinese WuShu Association. Rawcliffe has appeared or featured on several video/DVD's including "Ip Chun Wooden Dummy Techniques" by Legend Productions, "Chinese Masters of Kung Fu" by Video Martial Arts International, "A World martial Arts Extravaganza" by Stuart Promotions and "World superstars of the Martial Arts" by Video Martial Arts International.

Shaun is a regular columnist for Wing Chun Illustrated—the world’s only magazine dedicated to Wing Chun, regardless of lineage or style. Published six times a year, each 60-page, full-colour issue features articles by and about the world’s greatest exponents of the art of Wing Chun. Wing Chun Illustrated is available in various formats: Print, Apple iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and Web.

Accolades

In 1999, he was an awardee "in recognition of his commitment and devotion to the development of martial arts in the United Kingdom and around the world" at the 1st COMBAT Hall of Fame awards.

In 2001, he was presented with an award “in recognition of the contribution to gain martial arts practice greater popularity in both the UK and the world” at the 3rd annual COMBAT Hall of Fame awards.

In 2002 was made an Honorary Committee Member of Ip Man Tong by the Ip Man Tong Development Council, Foshan.

In 2008, was included in a set of collectable stamps for the Olympic Wu Shu stamp album for the 2008 Olympics.

In 2009, he accepted the position of a regional coordinator of the newly formed Hong Kong based World Wing Chun Union.

In 2011, he was an awardee for the third time at the COMBAT Hall of Fame 2011 awards, receiving the Combat Special Achievement award “To recognise his selfless & continued undertaking to gain awareness for the many benefits Martial Arts has to offer”.
