Professional career

Early life

Dawson is Jewish. He was born in Eilat, Israel. He is the son of Joe Dawson and Iris. His father is an American basketball player who played in Israel for more than 20 years. His parents divorced when he was 11, and Shawn lived with his mother in Eilat. He started to play in Hapoel Eilat youth teams until he was 14, then he moved to live with his father, Joe, and his younger brother, Tyler in Rehovot. He joined Maccabi Rishon LeZion youth team. Although he played in Maccabi Rishon LeZion youth team, Dawson played in "Katzir" high school team and helped them to move up to Israeli Premier League of High Schools in 2010. He also led Maccabi Rishon LeZion youth team to win the State Youth Championship in 2012.

Maccabi Rishon LeZion

Dawson made his professional debut at age 19 with Maccabi Rishon LeZion during the 2012/13 season. He didn't get many minutes due to his age, but a year later, Dawson turned to a key player in the starting line-up after averaging 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Dawson made his break in 2014/15, when leading Maccabi Rishon LeZion to Israeli Super League playoffs. He made his career high against Hapoel Holon, when he scored 28 points and took 18 rebounds. He averaged 21.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in the playoffs. In the same season, he was named in Israeli Super League best line-up and he also named as the best young player of the season. Dawson declared himself eligible for 2015 NBA draft, but he rejected offers from Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans and Phoenix Suns and undrafted. At the end of the season, Dawson signed on a new two-year contract with Maccabi Rishon LeZion, despite interest from Maccabi Tel Aviv B.C. and Hapoel Jerusalem B.C.

International career

Dawson plays for the Israel national basketball team, and was selected to Israel squad for Eurobasket 2015.
