Sheldon High School is a public high school in Sheldon, Iowa, serving students of the Sheldon Community School District in grades 9-12. The school mascot is the Orab, a portmanteau of the school colors, orange and black.[6] Athletic competitions have taken place in the Siouxland Conference since 2009, when the school moved from the Lakes Conference.[7]

Athletics

Sheldon High School won a golf title in 1960 and a class A cross-country championship in 1971.[8][9] The football team made it to the championship game in 2005 but lost to Sigourney-Keota,[10] while the 2010 team made it to the semi-finals, losing to North Polk.[11] The football team also had teams from the early 1980s who participated in state and made it to the quarterfinal round. The school sent other teams to the tournament in 2009,[12] 2011,[13] and 2012.[14] The volleyball team has made two playoff appearances, finishing second overall in 2009, but was defeated by Grundy Center in the first round two years later.[15][16] The Sheldon boys basketball team secured a berth in the 2013 Iowa High School basketball tournament, and went on to win the 2A state championship by upsetting #1 ranked West Fork of Sheffield 48-36 in the final.[17] This was Sheldon's first state title in basketball, and their first appearance in the state tournament since 1977.[18]

Sheldon High School Summer Theatre

Begun in 1972 by Jay Shelp,[19] Sheldon High School Summer Theatre is the only high school repertory company in the state of Iowa[20] and one of only a few in the United States.[21] SHSST presents six full-length shows over the course of six weeks during June and July. Students are responsible for all aspects of production. The program is mainly staffed by SHSST alumni.[22] Lissa Lane-Johnson directs the program.[23]
