Club career
Early career
Born in Willemstad, Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, Martis previously played for SBV Excelsior and FC Eindhoven in the Netherlands before joining English League Two club Darlington in 2005.
Hibernian
He moved to Scottish Premier League club Hibernian in August 2006 on a three-year deal.[2] During his season at Hibs he scored three goals in the first half of the season, and was not highly regarded by the Hibs fans, making several errors. In what was ultimately his last game for the club against Hearts he made an error which led to Hibs being scored against in the first 30 seconds, and he was substituted at half time.[3]
West Bromwich Albion
Martis signed for West Bromwich Albion by former Hibernian boss Tony Mowbray for £50,000 on 2 July 2007.[4] He made his debut for the club in a 4–2 League Cup defeat against Cardiff City on 25 September 2007.[5] His league debut was in a 2–1 win away at Leicester City on 8 December 2007.[6]
Loan moves
In January 2008 Martis joined Scunthorpe United on loan for an initial period of one month.[7]
On 31 October 2008, Martis moved to Doncaster Rovers on loan for an initial period of one month to cover for some injured players.[8] He made his Rovers debut in a 0–0 draw against Swansea City on 1 November.[9] He scored his first goal for the Rovers against Ipswich Town on 15 November 2008.[10]
Back to West Brom
Martis made his first Premier League appearance for West Brom on 16 March 2009 against West Ham United in a 0–0 draw. He made a critical error for West Brom on 18 May 2009 against Liverpool, stumbling over the ball, allowing Steven Gerrard to race clear and score. His team was relegated following the eventual 2–0 loss.
Martis scored his first goal for West Brom in their first match of the new Championship season, a 1–1 draw with Newcastle United.[11] Martis then added to his goal tally, by equalising for West Brom in their 3–1 win over Plymouth Argyle on 12 September 2009.[12]
Doncaster
Martis signed for Doncaster Rovers from West Bromwich Albion on 1 February 2010, on a three and a half-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[13] On 24 April 2010, Martis scored a header in the 89th minute against local rivals Scunthorpe United. This was the final goal of the game as Doncaster won 4–3. He was released on 21 February 2013 after 73 appearances and 3 goals.[14][15]
