Shengshan Island

Shengshan Island, also called Houtouwan, was a fishing village located just 40 miles east of Shanghai, China.[1][2] The island was once home to more than 2,000 fishermen among other residents, but was abandoned in the early 1990s. Today the island is only home to a handful of people, yet is a popular tourist attraction.[3] Reasons for the near total abandonment of the island include problems with education and food delivery. The island is part of a chain of 400 islands east of Shanghai. Since it's abandonment greenery has overtaken what was once a bustling village.[4]
